Biden's Capital Gains Tax
By Mike Huckabee
Thursday, the Dow took a nosedive after Bloomberg reported that President Biden plans to pay for his trillions in new spending by nearly doubling the capital gains tax on the wealthy. Combined with the existing tax on investment income, that would jack federal taxes on investors to as high as 43.4%.
Biden’s press secretary Jen Psaki defended the massive tax hike plan, saying that the new spending should “be on the backs of the wealthiest Americans who can afford it and corporations and businesses who can afford it.”
And there in a nutshell is a perfect example of how Democrats don’t understand how economies work. The wealthiest people didn’t get wealthy by sitting around waiting for someone to take 43.4% of their income, because they "can afford it." They will find ways to shelter their wealth, which means taking it out of investments that create jobs. And businesses don’t pay taxes, they collect them. So they’ll have to raise prices to cover the costs of Biden’s new taxes, which will be passed on to consumers.
In other words, regular working Americans will ultimately pay the price, just like their 401Ks paid for it when the mere mention of this plan tanked the stock market. This is how we get that unique Democratic invention, “stagflation,” in which prices go up (inflation) even while the economy stagnates.
Too bad we have a President who's spent his entire life in government. If only Americans had had the chance to vote for someone with business experience instead!
Massive Explosion
By Mike Huckabee
Tuesday in Kingston, New Hampshire, a massive explosion shook houses, knocked pictures off walls and was felt miles away. It turned out to have come from a nearby rock quarry where a man had detonated 80 pounds of explosives as part of an elaborate gender-reveal party stunt gone wrong. Miraculously, nobody was injured, and he’s cooperating with authorities.
The story reports that there was blue dust on the site, so I’m assuming it was a boy. I don’t know if he’ll face any charges over the explosion, but he’ll probably be canceled for imposing a gender on a newborn.
Farewell To Two Blazing Stars
By PAT REEDER
As resident pop culture historian of the Huckabee media empire, the sad duty falls to inform you of the passing of two showbiz figures whose names aren’t so well-known to today’s favored target demographics, but they were fascinating and important nonetheless.
First, back in the days when women who disrobed for a living were called strippers, burlesque dancers or ecdysiasts instead of Grammy Award nominees, there were few such performers more beautiful, beloved or notorious than Blaze Starr (born Fannie Belle Fleming.)
The longtime star at the Two O’Clock Club in Baltimore, she was known as “The Hottest Blaze in Burlesque.” She claimed to have had an affair with JFK, and she definitely had a longtime romance with Louisiana Gov. Earl K. Long, which was the basis for the Paul Newman movie, “Blaze.” John Waters cited her humor and style as major influences, as do many in today’s neo-burlesque/vintage fashion movement. She died Monday at her home in West Virginia at 83.
Also on Monday, songwriter/producer Jim Steinman died suddenly in Connecticut at 73.
Steinman’s wildly theatrical rock songs made him the perfect partner for Meatloaf’s soaring vocals. Together, they created the iconic 1977 album “Bat Out Of Hell,” which sold 50 million copies worldwide, is certified 14-times platinum, and spawned several karaoke standards. Those include the mini-opera “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” featuring these immortal lyrics:
“I swore that I would love you to the end of time!
So now, I’m praying for the end of time
To hurry up and arrive…”
Trivia: “Bat Out Of Hell” grew out of a futuristic rock musical version of “Peter Pan” that Steinman wrote called “Neverland.”
Steinman also worked with Meatloaf on the sequel, but not on “Bat Out Of Hell III.” The two had a close but occasionally contentious relationship, and Steinman worked with other acts, creating hits for Air Supply ("Making Love Out of Nothing at All"), Celine Dion (“It’s All Coming Back to Me Now”) and the famously bizarre Bonnie Tyler opus, “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” He also wrote “Bat Out Of Hell: The Musical” for the stage.
I find it odd that some obituaries failed to mention Steinman recorded one solo album, “Bad For Good,” in 1981. He wrote it for Meatloaf, who suffered vocal problems so Steinman stepped in and gave it a go. It only made it to #63 on the Billboard charts, but it was top 10 in the UK and Australia, so I’d say it deserved some recognition. And I'm honored to give some recognition to both of these entertainers. RIP.
Bonus Podcast Episode
By Mike Huckabee
On this bonus episode of "The People's Podcast," Congressman Guy Reschenthaler joins Governor Huckabee to discuss the various power-grabs that Democrats are currently attempting in Congress, including their unconstitutional push for D.C. statehood and their attempt to eliminate the filibuster. Plus, they discuss the situation at the border, the Left's "job-killing monster" proposal to double the capital gains tax, and Joe Biden's lack of moderation.
A Chauvin Verdict Reversal Is Likely
By Mike Huckabee
It’s inevitable that former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin will appeal his triple conviction, but his loudest critics still don’t seem to realize how helpful they were to his chances of getting those convictions overturned.
Fox News’ Tucker Carlson is receiving one of his regular vilifications for saying that because of all the loud threats of riots if Chauvin wasn’t found guilty, Americans can’t be certain that the verdict was based on the evidence and not on fear, which would be jury-tampering. But Harvard Law Professor Emeritus Alan Dershowitz agrees that the judge made a terrible mistake by not sequestering the jury so they didn’t hear the threats, and he also believes the verdict might be reversed on appeal.
Those who are attacking Carlson should consider that a lot of people on their own side are also tacitly admitting that they believe the protesters had an effect on the jury. For instance, after as much as thanking George Floyd for being a martyr (comments that earned their own blowback), House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suggested that the “thousands, millions of people around the world who came out for justice” played a key role in the conviction. If she believed the verdict was based solely on evidence, wouldn’t she have just thanked the 12 jurors, and not all the people outside the courthouse?
An alternate juror who didn’t vote on the verdict but didn’t know she wouldn’t be part of the final jury gave an interview to CBS in which she said she would have voted guilty. She cited the video and said it showed Chauvin taking the lead in dealing with George Floyd and ignoring bystanders' warnings that Floyd was having trouble breathing. She also said she was convinced by one of the prosecution’s medical experts and thought Chauvin’s attorneys over-promised and under-delivered.
However, she also said she didn’t want to see more rioting if there wasn’t a guilty verdict. Did the actual jurors think the same thing?
Even if the jurors insist that the threats had no impact on their verdict, the very fact that they knew of them could give Chauvin’s attorneys enough reasonable doubt that he got a fair trial to overturn it on appeal. This is why Dershowitz said the judge should’ve sequestered the jury, and why people in responsible positions (Maxine Waters) should’ve known better than to try to interject their political views into the justice system.
As even the judge agreed, if Chauvin’s appeal succeeds, it will ironically be because the very people who demanded that guilty verdict made it so much easier to overturn.
Rush To Judgement
By Mike Huckabee
In the rush-to-judgement case of the Columbus police officer who shot and killed black teenager Ma’Khia Bryant, more evidence is arising that, as one neighbor whose surveillance video camera caught it all said, he “did what he thought was best.” The neighbor said the cop was in a bad spot no matter what he did, but Bryant was charging at another girl with an upraised knife, and if the cop hadn’t fired, she might have fatally stabbed the other girl.
Video also reportedly caught Bryant threatening to stab the other girls just before the cop fired. Warning: raw language at this link in addition to the disturbing video:
Some are still criticizing the cop, and demanding to know why he didn’t use a taser instead (they don’t always stop a fired-up person, and if he’d missed, the other girl might’ve been stabbed to death) or why he didn’t try negotiation (from the time he arrived, got out, saw her charging with the knife and fired was nine seconds. Even John Kerry couldn’t negotiate away America’s national security that fast.)
A Reader Writes Back...
Governor Huckabee: Thank you for adding clarity to an otherwise murky world. My family & I emigrated to this wonderful country beginning with my grandfather. In fact he fought in WWII while my father fought in the Italian Cavalry. My grandfather helped us come to this country, and I'm so grateful he did. Lately, I believe he would be spinning in his grave at Ft. Logan National Cemetery if he could see the evil taking over our country. I appreciate what & how you think, and how you express those thoughts. Thank you for all you do.
