Today's Commentary:  Katherine Hepburn: a lesson in gender identity-- Terrible tragedy -- Kathy Griffin and the Secret Service -- Mike Pence -- A special 4th of July story

In light of the recent story about a Canadian parent who successfully kept any designation of gender off a newborn baby’s birth certificate, to allow the child to “decide” later, here’s another story brought to me by a staffer.

She’d just watched a documentary on the life of screen legend Katharine Hepburn in which the great Kate herself reveals that as a young girl she, for a time, wanted to be a boy.

She always was a tomboy and grew up with brothers. In a day when gender roles were much more differentiated than they are today, she just wasn’t a “girly-girl” and envied boys’ freedom to play hard and have adventures together –- to the point where she decided to be a boy herself. She grabbed some scissors and cut her hair extremely short, dressed in boys’ clothes and proclaimed that she would go by the name “Jimmy.” The documentary even showed a picture of the young Kate as a “boy.”

Of course, we know that Kate’s “boy” phase was just that, a phase, and that she grew up to be a wonderfully talented actress. Her ability to create a different persona as a young child spoke not to her real gender identity but to a power of imagination entirely consistent with her later acting skill. (In fact, for one movie role, as part of the plot she had to "fool" other characters into thinking she was a boy.) She would always favor a casual style offscreen and preferred pants to dresses, but she was definitely a woman.

Now, what would happen to Katharine Hepburn if she were born in this decade? Perhaps her parents would notice her desire to be one of the boys, declare her a male, and immediately start her on testosterone shots and other means of gender "reassignment." After all, young children can decide these things, right? “Kate” could have been turned by her caring family into “Nate” and sent forward into a life of gender confusion hell.

All by well-meaning parents who are too quick to assume the correctness of trendy thinking in 2017.

Sincerely,

Mike Huckabee

Terrible Tragedy

By Mike Huckabee

This is a horrific crime and a terrible tragedy: Miosotis Familia, a 12-year veteran New York Policewoman and mother of three, was shot to death in cold blood while sitting in her patrol car. Her killer was a multiple convicted criminal with a history of violence against police who was paroled in 2013. He was killed by other officers after murdering Officer Familia in what’s been called an “assassination” and an “unprovoked attack.” Also from his history of making threats against police on Facebook, it could have been an easily-predicted attack if anyone had taken action to report it.

Some commenters are already asking if the media will try to tie the overtly violent anti-police rhetoric of the past couple of years to this act of violence with the same zeal they apply to Republicans tweeting a silly meme about CNN. It’s a fair question, but let that debate wait for a while. This is the moment to show respect for the police and offer our prayers and sympathies to Officer Familia and her family and comrades.

Kathy Griffin and the Secret Service

By Mike Huckabee

When Kathy Griffin posed with the bloody severed faux-head of President Trump for that infamous and allegedly comedic photo, many of us wondered, “Hey, where’s the Secret Service?” One can well imagine that if this image had been created with the head of the previous (or any other) holder of that high office, the response would have been immediate. We can be relieved to know that the Secret Service did show up at Griffin’s door over the weekend and question her for over an hour about the intention of her vile stunt.

They say their investigation isn’t yet closed, so perhaps they will talk with her again. That inspired someone we all know and love (me) to tweet a comment that actually is comedic.

Mike Pence

By Mike Huckabee

Here’s further proof of how out-of-touch with mainstream Americans our celebrities and news media figures are. When Vice President Mike Pence revealed that he doesn’t have dinner or drinks alone with women other than his wife, he weathered a flurry of attacks, ranging from mockery of his squareness to accusations of sexism. But it turns out that most Americans think that’s a pretty good rule to follow.

A New York Times poll of registered voters found that a plurality of men and a clear majority of women agree with Mike Pence. Here’s a detail worth noting: only 48% of men think it’s inappropriate for a man to have a drink alone with a woman who’s not his wife, but 60% of women think it is. Maybe that means 12% of women might want to keep a closer eye on their husbands.

Another point worth sharing: Mike and Karen Pence have been happily married for 32 years. How many of the Hollywood and news media celebrities who mocked him can say the same?

A reminder about North Korea

By Mike Huckabee

Here’s a reminder that that the insanity and belligerence of North Korea’s leadership is not a recent development. It’s also a reminder of how some heroic American military members held captive by the brutal regime responded with both unbelievable courage and death-defying contempt.

Just an "add" to the Katherine Hepburn article - I can't find the source where I read it, but I figure you are good at looking this stuff up - Studies have been done that when DNA is tested after a young child has gone through gender reassignment surgery and lived through puberty , guess what? They still have the same chromosomes. So after all those hormones, all you have is a confused gender. Their chromosomes are still the original chromosomes. So what does that say? Gender can't be changed. No matter how much someone wants to change it. We are born that way - plain and simple. So this wanting to be something else is really like wanting to put on a new jacket. What happens when they change their mind? I am assuming suicide with the rates as high as they are. Sad to say, but that's the reality.

Mr Pence is a smart man. If you don't have drinks alone with a woman not your wife--you will have much less of a chance for some tabloid photographer or person who doesn't like you or maybe your political choices taking a picture and insinuating a torrid affair. Without proof, of course, but that doesn't matter! lol
