The term “useful idiot” is defined at the Rational Wiki website as “someone who supports one side of an ideological debate, but who is manipulated and held in contempt by the leaders of their faction or is unaware of the ultimate agenda driving the ideology to which they subscribe.” It was coined during the 1950s –- some believe Lenin came up with it, but we don’t know –- in reference to socialist protesters deliberately inflamed with mindless passions and sent by organizers where needed. (Another great term for this is “rent-a-mob.”) As opposed to a genuine grassroots movement, a group comprised of useful idiots is played like a violin by those controlling it and has little in the way of a unifying ideology, other than anger. Just as the term states, they’re not very smart and they are being used.

I’d like to be able to give the mayor of New York credit for at least a speck of intelligence, but the fact that Bill de Blasio went to Hamburg to join the G20 protest, which was comprised of useful idiots setting cars on fire and attacking police officers (sending some to the hospital) in the name of socialism and anarchy, makes that impossible. I must either call him an idiot or assume that he actually is aware of the organizers’ ultimate agenda and chooses to support it anyway. Either conclusion is tragic for the people he's supposed to serve.

But maybe he’s both: a true supporter of anarchy for attending the protest, but also an idiot for doing it at the same time a freshly assassinated New York cop was being remembered. (Like Certs: a candy mint AND a breath mint!) The irony can’t be missed: at a time when law enforcement in America is literally under fire, the mayor of New York lends his support to violent protest. In fact, this was a big weekend to support law enforcement here in our country; it also marked a year since the shocking massacre of five cops in Dallas. But we know where de Blasio’s heart really is –- and isn’t –- because he has shown us.
