It’s always a tough call, but Rep. Eric Swalwell might actually take the prize for the midterm elections’ slimiest and most dishonest campaign ad. The ad shows a mother being pulled away from her husband and two children at dinner and being arrested for having had an abortion, with the tag, "MAGA Republicans want women arrested for having an abortion. This is what that looks like.”

As Rebecca Downs at Townhall.com points out, no pro-life abortion laws call for arresting the mother. Any criminal charges are aimed at abortion providers. A spokeswoman for the National Right to Life Committee called the ad fear-mongering misinformation. Last May, the NRLC put out an open letter signed by dozens of pro-life organizations, urging state legislators “to reject legislation and policy initiatives that would impose criminal penalties on women who have abortions," saying that these women “require compassion and support, not criminalization."
