Not Guilty
Thursday, former President Trump went to court in Washington, DC, for what’s become all too common an ordeal: pleading “not guilty” to politicized charges, in this case, the four attempts by Democrat attack poodle Jack Smith to send him to prison for 500 years for exercising free speech, seeking legal advice, and challenging what he claimed was a rigged election. If every Democrat who did that last thing was charged, the DC jails would be full of Democrat politicians, which would be a marked improvement on having them in the government.
Since the events got wall-to-wall media coverage, I’m not going to rehash them in detail. But here’s a good recap from PJ Media’s Paula Bolyard:
Redstate.com also has an account that includes Trump’s remarks to reporters that it was a “sad day”…”a persecution of a political opponent. This was never supposed to happen in America.”
Trump was also reportedly irked by the judge calling him “Mr. Trump” instead of “President Trump.” Sounds as if, like most of the officials in DC, this judge was never able to cognitively process the fact that Trump really was the President.

Breitbart has more reactions from Trump, including a promise that “In 2024, it will be our turn” and the weaponization of the DOJ for political purposes will end. They also remind us of a (surprise) New York Times article from 2022 that revealed that President Biden had “confided to his inner circle that he believed former President Donald J. Trump was a threat to democracy and should be prosecuted,” and that while he had never directly communicated with Attorney General Merrick Garland (right; just like he never DIRECTLY was involved in Hunter’s shady business deals?), he had “privately said” he wanted Garland to act “more like a prosecutor who is willing to take decisive action over the events of Jan. 6.”
Trump’s attorney might have let slip one of his possible defenses…
And this is a MUST-READ: I mentioned yesterday about how Trump’s backing of ongoing investigations into the 2020 election showed that he did not “know” he’d lost the election when he was challenging it, which is the basis for all these indictments. Tim Parlatore, who is the attorney for former NYPD Police Commissioner Bernie Kerik, said he was “stunned” when he heard from Jack Smith’s office seeking records he’d already provided to them last month.
Parlatore said those records showed that Trump and Rudy Giuliani were working with Kerik in gathering sworn affidavits from people alleging election irregularities, which proves they did not believe Trump had lost the election fairly. Paratore said those records are “absolutely exculpatory,” they destroy the whole foundation of Smith’s charges, and he can’t believe Smith and his team either didn’t read them or knew what they said and ignored them.
But then, we already knew that Smith conveniently edited Trump’s words about protesting at the Capitol “peacefully and patriotically” out of his indictment because that undercut his narrative, too. I wonder how many more examples we’ll eventually find of selective editing and suppression of evidence that were necessary to construct this house of cards.
CNN leaves out the finer details of what is happening
If you watched a channel like CNN (which I don’t recommend) on Thursday, you would’ve heard hundreds of references to Trump and the fact that he’s facing multiple indictments, but very few details about what his alleged infractions are. They speak in general terms, like “fraud” and “obstruction,” but don’t tell viewers that to arrive at those accusations, evidence had to be twisted and suppressed, Smith had to read Trump’s mind like the Amazing Kreskin, and obscure laws were dragged out of the 19th century and stretched further than Lizzo’s yoga pants.
Meanwhile, you would have heard almost no references to Biden and the growing evidence of his family’s influence-peddling racket precisely because, as Elizabeth Stauffer at PowerlineBlog.com writes, the charges against him are so straightforward: “The average American understands bribery, greed, and lies, concepts that are as old as mankind.”
They’re trying desperately to convince Americans that Trump is a criminal without offering any details about the convoluted accusations, while not telling you about the accusations against Biden because they’re so obvious and clear cut that if they say anything at all about them…well, then you’d know.
More analyses of latest Trump indictment
Yesterday, to prove I don’t dwell in an echo chamber like so many of our major media figures, I linked to three legal experts who hate Donald Trump but still think these latest charges against him are dangerous garbage. Today, I’m linking to a few conservative outlets that feel the same way, and who share their analyses of these latest indictments.
First up, talk show host and legal scholar Mark Levin, who doesn’t split any hairs in declaring these indictments to be “crap”…

…And he says that Trump’s attorneys should seek an emergency hearing before the Supreme Court to have them thrown out.
William A. Jacobson is a Cornell University law professor, and he can’t even figure out from these indictments just what Trump did that’s supposed to be a crime.

And former federal prosecutor Will Scharf has an article in the Federalist listing six ways these indictments are “legally flawed and politically shady.”
July jobs
The Labor Department announced this morning that the US economy added 187,000 jobs in July, well below the 200,000 economists predicted. Some see this drop in job creation as a sign that the Fed’s 11 hikes of interest rates to their highest level in 22 years is finally working to cool down the economy so inflation will drop. So, “yay,” I guess. One bit of real good news: the report showed wages are up by 4.4 percent from July 2022. So if you can find something to buy that really only costs 4.4% more than it did a year ago, you’re sitting pretty.

Meanwhile, you probably won’t hear this from the White House as they trumpet the wonders of “Bidenomics,” but federal tax receipts have fallen for two consecutive quarters and total federal receipts have fallen for three consecutive quarters, and that’s typically considered to be a sign of a recession.
Trump’s biggest critics speak up
One reason I invite liberals on my show (not that they usually accept) is that I believe you should have civil debates and discussions with people of different views. Sometimes you might learn something you didn’t know, or at least understand their viewpoint a little better. But it’s mostly because people who only talk to those who agree with them and try to silence any challengers become intellectually lazy and flabby. When forced to defend their positions, as in presidential debates, they look like deer caught in the headlights.
As William F. Buckley famously said, “Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to other views, but then are shocked and offended to discover that there ARE other views.”
That’s why I am careful to read what people of other viewpoints have to say about major issues, to see if they have any valid points worth considering before writing my opinions. And in the case of these new indictments of Donald Trump by Jack Smith, it’s been interesting to see that the criticism is coming not just from Trump partisans but also from some of Trump’s harshest critics. There are legal experts out there who despise Trump, or at least don’t want him ever to be President again, and even they are saying these charges are shockingly weak and downright dangerous to the rule of law and the fabric of our society, all of which partisans like Smith will willingly shred in their mindless zeal to “get Trump.”
So today, instead of pointing you to commentary from the pro-Trump media, I’m going to link to several articles on this subject from some of Trump’s biggest critics. But all have legal expertise and even they have to admit that they find these indictments to be ridiculous, groundless, and in the words of Powerline’s John Hinderaker, “a bad joke.” He also says it’s ironic “that the legal theories asserted in the complaint may be more far-fetched than Trump’s legal theories that form the basis for the indictment.” Maybe Smith should indict himself. I wouldn’t object.

I warn you, all of those articles contain the predictable Trump-bashing, a massive dose in the case of Ann Coulter. But I think that when even people who hate Trump that much can’t bring themselves to defend this outrageous prosecutorial abuse of power, it tells us all we’re not kidding ourselves: that really is a skunk we smell.

NBA distances itself
The National Basketball Players Association rushed to distance itself from a $50,000 donation made by the Orlando Magic to a PAC supporting Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. The players union issued a statement condemning the donation as “alarming given recent comments and policies of its beneficiary.” Policies like supporting parents’ rights, protecting the lives of the unborn, and not allowing racist CRT propaganda and sexual groomers into elementary schools?
I’ll be sure to let you know if any NBA-related organization ever claims to be alarmed by the genocidal or child- and slave-labor policies of communist China.

Rev. Al Sharpton hits himself with a brick
The Rev. Al Sharpton tried to throw a brick at Donald Trump, but it turned out to be a boomerang and it came back and beaned him. In attempting to attack Trump, Sharpton declared on MSNBC, “…One day our children’s children will read American history. And can you imagine our reading that James Madison or Thomas Jefferson tried to overthrow the government so they could stay in power?”

Huck’s Heroes
A big Huck’s Hero salute to three people who might have brought us a big step closer to curing cancer.

The first is Anna Olivia Healey, a little girl from Indiana who died in 2005 at age nine of a rare form of children’s cancer called neuroblastoma that affects 600 children a year in the US. Shortly before Anna’s death, cancer researcher Linda Malkas met her family. Anna’s father Steve Healey asked her to do something about neuroblastoma and gave a $25,000 donation to her lab, City of Hope in Duarte, California. Malkas called that “the moment that changed my life — my fork in the road.”
After two decades of research, Malkas and City of Hope are in Stage 1 trials of a pill-form drug called AOH1996 that targets a protein called PCNA that helps cancer cells grow. In previous tests, it’s been shown to shut down cancer cell growth while leaving healthy, normal cells untouched, cutting off the growth of cancerous tumors. PCNA was previously thought to be impossible to shut down with drugs, but if this is successful, it could someday be used to treat breast, prostate, brain, ovarian, cervical, skin and lung cancers.
Even though it’s still in the testing phase, I don’t think it’s too soon to give a big salute and thanks to dedicated researcher Linda Malkas, Anna’s dad Steve, and the inspiration for it all, Anna Olivia Healey. She had only nine years on this Earth, but her brief life may have been the spark of inspiration that could give many more years of life to countless cancer patients in the future. It’s a great reminder that we never know the huge impact on the world that can be made by the life of any child.
Green nonsense
Say, remember all those great long-term energy savings the Biden Department of Energy promised us when they started creating all those new regulations that would make it expensive-to-impossible to buy a gas stove? Yeah, about that…according to a new analysis, it turns out it’s fewer savings than they thought. But you will be able to pocket, on average, a cool nine cents a month. That’s nothing to sneeze at. I hope not, since it’s not even enough to buy one Kleenex.
Speaking of counterproductive green nonsense, as EVs pile up unsold on car lots and car manufacturers have to report huge losses due to catering to a market that barely exists, people are finally starting to notice one of the problems we’ve been writing about for years: lithium ion batteries have a tendency to explode into flames, filling the air with toxic fumes, and they can’t be extinguished by conventional means. Here are just a few of the stories relating to that topic that have come across my desk in the past week or so:
This story from American Thinker explains what happens when a high voltage lithium ion battery fails and catches on fire, the calamitous consequences of that fire, and why it’s almost impossible to put it out.
That cargo ship filled with over 3700 new vehicles that caught on fire off the coast of the Netherlands, killing one crew member, has fortunately been towed safely into port after burning for a week. The fire is believed to be out. There were fears it would sink and pollute the waters in a sensitive habitat for birds and marine life. The cause of the blaze is unknown but is believed to be an electric car battery. There were initial reports of about 35 of the cars on the ship being EVs, but now we’re being told it’s nearly 500.
The Epoch Times reports that as EVs and electric scooters have become more popular, the number of lithium ion battery fires is growing quickly. New York City has now recorded 131 fires, 76 injuries, and 13 deaths, while San Francisco saw nine injuries and four deaths in 2021; 142 injuries and six deaths in 2022; and so far this year, the death toll has exceeded the previous two years combined. In New York, some landlords are banning ebikes and mobility devices for fear they’ll catch their buildings on fire. (This link might be subscription only, but those are the most important stats.)
Between cuisinarting migratory birds and beaching whales with wind turbines, all the mining and landfills that will be needed for all those batteries and solar panels, the pollution created in building all those electric cars, the huge strain they’ll put on the already over-taxed power grid and the deadly battery fires filling the air with toxic smoke, I wonder if there will be anything left of the Earth after all the environmentalists get finishing “saving” it.
