Pretty sure this isn’t the kind of “ethics standards” the Democrats want to impose on judges

A judicial council ruled that a group of federal judges did not violate ethics regulations when they refused to hire Columbia University grads as law clerks.

The complaint accused the judges of political discrimination, but in light of Columbia’s tolerance of recent violent anti-Israel protests, the counsel found that the judges had discretion to decline to hire law clerks who may have engaged in unlawful conduct. It’s not known who these judges are, but a group of judges recently announced that they would not hire law clerks from Columbia because “we have lost confidence in Columbia as an institution of higher education. Columbia has instead become an incubator of bigotry. As a result, Columbia has disqualified itself from educating the future leaders of our country.”

Nice to know that even if the university itself refuses to impose any consequences for such rotten behavior, there will be a price to pay when they get out into the real world.

In another welcome ruling reeling in a government power grab, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit allowed a lawsuit against the government to proceed over the CDC’s pandemic-era moratorium on evictions of tenants for not paying their rent.

While the order might have had good intentions (protecting people from losing their homes due to the wrongheaded federal shutdown of the economy), the plaintiffs argue that the CDC did not have the power to order landlords (many of them struggling small business owners) to shoulder the massive financial burden of going for months without collecting any rent. The Biden Administration kept extending the moratorium until the Supreme Court ruled in August of 2021 that the CDC had no constitutional authority to order landlords to stop collecting rent payments. This is yet another example of courts having to step in to enforce the limits on federal power because some people in the government believe their good intentions override the Constitution.
