I didn’t want to comment too deeply on Kamala Harris’ first major policy speech on the economy before she gave it on Friday. But I did comment on the lunacy of some of the points that were released in advance. Now that she’s given it, I have to admit: it was worse than even I imagined it would be. It was a load of heavy-handed and outright unconstitutional leftist totalitarianism guaranteed to create shortages, starvation, more inflation and less freedom. How bad was it? It was so bad that even the Washington Post editorial board condemned it.
(Bonus: That link has screen caps from CNBC, showing how they put a negative headline on J.D. Vance’s proposal to raise the child tax credit, but reported dispassionately on Harris’ theft of his proposal.)
WaPo columnist Catherine Rampell wrote, “It’s hard to exaggerate how bad this policy is,” in a column titled, “When your opponent calls you ‘communist,’ maybe don’t propose price controls.”

(That link also has some great info about how grocery stores actually work. Hint: They’re not “price-gouging.” They operate on a 2% profit margin at most, usually less, and forcing them to charge less would lead to widespread closures and food shortages.)
Harris' speech was so bad, even CNN ripped her for it, comparing her call for price controls and heavy government intervention in the marketplace to the harmful socialist policies of Venezuela and the USSR, and noting that she was pandering to “economically illiterate” voters. Admittedly, that's her base.
Personally, I’m wary of calling someone a communist because it’s such a cliché that conservatives do that to liberals. I even gave her the benefit of the doubt that she was perhaps too dim to realize that her embrace of “equity” as government-enforced equality of outcomes and from each according to his abilities to each according to his needs was Marxism 101. Then, she opened her mouth again and reinforced the idea that she’s the cackling Stalin. But on the other hand, she did call it “price-gauging,” so maybe it’s just the person loading her Teleprompter who’s a communist.
And if you think Tim Walz is going to pull her toward the center, check out this article. It’s about one of the students whom Walz took on his many trips to China. He claims he’s been trying to warn people for 30 years that Walz adores China’s communist ideology, that he’s a “true believer” and a “Maoist to the core,” that he bought copies of Mao’s Little Red Book in China to hand out as gifts, and he’s applied Mao’s authoritarian tactics to his governing in Minnesota.
If Mao were still alive to see how Walz runs Minnesota, I wonder if he’d say, “Whoa, reel it in, dude!”
