THE LATEST NEWS

1. Least Surprising News of the Millennium:

The Cato Institute’s biannual “Freedom in the 50 States” survey found that blue states rank as the least free while red states are the highest in economic and personal freedom.

https://www.foxnews.com/us/new-york-ranks-as-least-free-state-survey

The study examines various types of freedom, including taxes, eminent domain laws, licensing requirements, drug policy, education choice and more. By their standards, the freest state is New Hampshire (state motto: “Live Free or Die”), followed by Florida and Nevada. The least free state is New York, which has held that position since the survey began in 2000, with Hawaii in second place. A spokesman said New York belies the liberal stereotype by ranking as the least free in both economic terms and in personal freedom. But then, “liberal” no longer means what it used to.

2. Lame Duck Mayor Does It Again:

Speaking of liberals who hate personal freedom, New York City’s lame duck Mayor Bill DeBlasio (he leaves at the end of December, but that’s not lame enough to stop his dictating) just mandated that all private sector employees must get the COVID vaccine or face fines up to $14,000 per infraction. He’s also expanding his “Key to NYC" vaccine passport program to access indoor dining, fitness and entertainment venues, to include 5-to-11-year-olds. His press secretary tweeted, "Get that shot by 12/14 for our youngest New Yorkers," and a second dose is required by December 27th. That deadline is just four days before DeBlasio leaves office.

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/de-blasio-announces-vaccine-mandate-for-private-sector-workers

DeBlasio bragged that New York is the first in America to do this. Let’s hope it’s also the last, and it’s the last time he’s ever in a position of power over other people. But you never can tell, because as the writer Bonchie at Redstate.com reminds us, New Yorkers just keep voting for this insanity over and over.

https://redstate.com/bonchie/2021/12/06/new-york-moves-to-choke-the-life-out-of-small-businesses-because-no-lessons-were-learned-n487231

DeBlasio claims these draconian measures are necessary due to the scary new Omicron variant. Yeah, about that…

Even Dr. Fauci, our Federal Secretary of Fearmongering, admitted that while it’s still early and we must be careful, “it does not look like there’s a great deal of severity to it.”

https://www.foxnews.com/live-news/omicron-coronavirus-variant-live-updates

Cases are popping up all over, including among those who have been vaccinated and who have had prior infections, which suggests that it is more highly transmissible; but so far, there have been few if any severe cases and no deaths. For instance, 10 passengers on a cruise ship tested positive for it, all were vaccinated and all were asymptomatic.

https://eturbonews.com/3010799/major-covid-19-outbreak-on-fully-vaccinated-norwegian-cruise-line-ship/

In short, DeBlasio is vastly overreaching his powers to force unconstitutional vaccine and passport mandates on New Yorkers (including small children) to stop a disease that is (A.) apparently not very dangerous, and (B.) resistant to vaccines. So we can honestly say that he is leaving office by showing the exact same level of wisdom he’s exhibited since he took office eight looooooooong years ago.

In a related story, last week, Nevada’s Public Employees’ Benefit Program Board voted to become the first state to impose a surcharge on unvaccinated workers of $55 a month, plus $175 for their spouses, partners, and dependents 18 and older. They say it’s to cover the costs of mandatory testing. Opponents argued that it was an unfair burden on workers to impose mandated testing on them, and then force them to pay for it. If it stands, it won’t go into effect until mid-summer.

Sounds like Nevada will soon be dropping in that “freedom states” ranking. Of course, Oregon has very little freedom to lose, so why not go whole hog and make wearing masks permanent?

https://www.conservativereview.com/oregon-drafting-rule-to-make-wearing-masks-permanent-2655921791.html

One doctor in the Oregon Health Authority explained, however, that, "Permanent means indefinite. It doesn’t necessarily mean permanent. We can repeal it as well, but we are only allowed to have a temporary rule for 180 days, and anything that goes beyond 180 days, we cannot extend it."

I don’t know about you, but especially in a state like Oregon, I would think twice before allowing the state to assume any permanent powers that they assure me really aren’t “permanent” permanent, but can be repealed anytime. How often has that ever happened? Let them do this, Oregonians, and it will be harder for you to escape wearing a mask than it was for Adam West.

3. Motion denied:

Friday, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals denied the government’s motion to transfer the case challenging President Biden’s OSHA vaccine mandate to a more Democrat-friendly court. It also denied their motion to lift the Fifth Circuit Court's stay on the Mandate.

https://pjmedia.com/news-and-politics/athena-thorne/2021/12/05/6th-circuit-delivers-another-body-blow-to-bidens-osha-vax-mandate-n1539028

And as I mentioned over the weekend, West Virginia Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin announced that he’ll join all 50 Republican Senators in opposing Biden’s vaccine mandate on private businesses with at least 100 employees.

https://redstate.com/mike_miller/2021/12/05/full-metal-manchin-joins-gop-to-torpedo-bidens-vax-mandate-n486615

The vaccine mandate is taking so many body blows, it’s starting to look like Sylvester Stallone in the first half of a “Rocky” movie. Sure, it may eventually “go the distance,” but at the moment, it looks like a bigger longshot than Rocky.

4. Latinx = Bad Idea:

Leftists can only win arguments by constantly redefining words so they can claim that the words required to prove them wrong are now offensive and can’t be used anymore. But their habits of inventing new words and claiming to be offended on behalf of other people may come back to bite them in the case of “Latinx.” That’s the baffling new PC term they invented to replace Latino or Hispanic (I’m not even sure if you’re supposed to pronounce it “Latin-X” or “la-TINX,” rhymes with Sphinx.)

Well, however you pronounce it, it turns out that Hispanics and Latinos really HATE being called “Latinx.” Politico reports that in a new survey, 68% refer to themselves as Hispanic, 21% prefer Latino/Latina, and only 2% call themselves “Latinx.” Furthermore, 40% said Latinx bothers or offends them, and 30% would be less likely to support a politician who uses it.

https://redstate.com/joesquire/2021/12/06/as-it-turns-out-the-term-latinx-is-actually-offensive-to-hispanic-voters-n487197

So in order to avoid offending people who aren’t offended, Democrats risk offending 40% of Hispanics/Latinos by calling them a name that only 2% of them like.

Say, here’s a thought: before exhibiting the “white privilege” of claiming to speak for minority groups, maybe ask them what they think first.

5.  Arrested with a catch:

You might have been encouraged by the news that California authorities were actually arresting people involved in the organized smash-and-grab robberies that are stripping store shelves, like the one in Los Angeles where thieves hit 11 high-end stores in one weekend, stealing $338,000 worth of merchandise. But hold the phone (and I don’t mean the iPhone you stole)…

https://pjmedia.com/news-and-politics/rick-moran/2021/12/03/14-california-looters-arrested-by-police-have-been-released-due-to-the-states-zero-bail-policy-n1538573

All 14 of the looting suspects taken into custody have already been released, due to one being a juvenile and the rest being subject to the bail reforms or zero bail policies of the leftist prosecutors. The exact same policies that have made so many criminals believe (correctly, it appears) that they can steal anything and be right back out on the street.

In the spirit of the L.A.-set movie Chinatown, I’m sorry to have to say that if you hoped to see any justice, “Forget it, Jake: it’s Democrat Town.”

6. Credibility burned:

It seems that virtually everything the mainstream media told us during the four years of the Trump Administration was wrong, and it’s only now coming out. Here’s another flaming log to add to the bonfire of their credibility: the claim that the Trump tax cuts only benefited the “rich.”

https://townhall.com/tipsheet/spencerbrown/2021/12/06/contrary-to-dem-talking-points-irs-data-proves-trumps-tax-cuts-cut-helped-middle-class-americans-the-most-n2600121

According to a new study in The Hill newspaper by the Heartland Institute's Justin Haskins, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act gave the most tax relief to working class Americans. Taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $15,000 to $50,000 got an average tax cut of 16-26%. Those making $50,000 to $100,000 got a 15-17% cut. Those making $100,000 to $500,000 got a cut of 11 to 13%. But the average cut for those making at least $1 million was less than 6%. From 2017 to 2018, every tax bracket of $200,000 and above paid a bigger share of the total tax burden, and every bracket below $200,000 paid a smaller share.

Also, even with lower tax rates, the total tax revenues to the government increased, which supports the Laffer Curve that Democrats claim is discredited. That’s the theory that at a certain point, higher tax rates start to suppress growth, which reduces tax revenues.

But do you know what really will give a big, fat tax cut to the rich? The Democrats’ “Build Back Batter” bill. I eagerly await the liberal media’s hostile coverage of that.

I'm not a lawyer, but it seems to me that charging unvaccinated people a surcharge for testing while not charging that same surcharge to vaccinated people who also get tested is a violation of the Equal Protection clause of the 14th Amendment. It borders on being a Bill of Attainder as well.
