The House Judiciary Committee will hold an emergency meeting today to put together a bill that will reportedly include eight new gun control measures. It includes “proposals to raise the minimum age for purchasing a semi-automatic weapon from 18 to 21, ban ‘high capacity magazines,’ establish a registry for bump stocks and more.” True to form, it’s not called the “Gun Control Omnibus Act” but the “Protect Our Kids Act.” So when you hear that term, you’ll know what it actually is.

Never let it be said that we don’t listen to all sides of an issue. Here’s an op-ed by Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut, detailing what he says are some small changes that could be made to gun laws and increasing support for mental health that could help reduce gun violence and prevent school shootings and that members of both parties could agree on.

I invite you to read what he has to say and tell us in the comments whether you would be willing to compromise on such measures, whether you think they would help, and why or why not.

For more, here’s Derek Hunter of Townhall.com analyzing a New York Times editorial demanding more gun control and explaining the holes in their thinking.

In his inimitable way, Kurt Schlichter explains that the problem isn’t a lack of gun laws, it’s a shortage of duty and accountability.

Finally, the uncle of one of the young victims of the Uvalde school shooting spoke out against people using their family’s name to promote more anti-gun laws. He said their own family are responsible gun owners, and they believe enhanced security at schools is a far better solution.

I just purchased another firearm and as required, I filled out an ATF Form 4473. I gave my name, my address, my race, country, state, and county I was born in. Additionally I had to answer questions about my behavior. I also provided my CC license as a show of good faith. From this point I would suppose that the ATF is going to inquire about the truthfulness of this signed form. So I’m a little unsure and overly cautious when another politician wants to require “background checks on all gun sales.” Isn’t form 4473 a background check? What other background checks will be burdened upon the millions of firearms owners who did not kill 100 people today?

Senator Chris Murphy is a Democrat waking up daily in the bed with a political party whose policies have ravaged cities across Our Land; Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Austin, Detroit, New York, D.C., The Border with Mexico, and the list goes on.

Clean up your own backyard before you mess with “Shall Not Be Infringed.” The DNC has infringed, broken, these cities, and are presently destroying Our Country’s economy as a whole.

The Democratic Party has created a Petri dish for all the putrefications of man’s lusts, greed, and arrogance. They applaud these behaviors and give them awards for these ever increasing lows. Their idols are wrecking the home, wrecking marriage, and wrecking men and women. Drugs, gangs, and felons are their constant cohorts. Christianity has been denigrated back to the arenas for blood sport, ridicule, and degradation.

The 2nd Amendment was never designed to function in the cesspool the Democrats spawned and nourish. Personal Responsibility, Accountability, Self Control, Graciousness, and the like are what makes this Country accredited with the good sense to have a 2nd Amendment.

So, no, Senator Chris Murphy. Your party’s resume as a peace maker is woefully lacking. There is too much your party has done and supports to obliterate our Constitution and Sovereignty. Clean up the messes you have made. Don’t make another mess of the 2nd Amendment.

As a retired police officer I can attest to Law Enforcement being handcuffed in dealing with mental illness. Due to HIPPA, LE is not allowed to delve into history or medical records and the same goes for backgrounding on gun purchase permits. This needs to change. Prosecutors need to prosecute. Judges need to sentence. Bail needs to be applied. More laws aren't needed. We have all the laws necessary if they are enforced. A person murders without hesitation so why would they obey ANY gun law? Let's get back to due process, hold people accountable for their actions and God back in school!

Link mental illness, Baker Acted, people to the background check. Yes to the 21for purchase as they are more mature at that age with better life choices. Make sure all school doors are locked to those outside and arm the front desk administration & teachers

How about we repeal Bidens 1990 something No gun zone laws. After it was enacted we've had shootings in all the places the were supposed to be protected. Then we need law enforcement to enforce the laws we already have. This revolving door for criminals needs to stop. We need a victim justice system right now it's backwards.

I am sick and tired of hearing daily news about gun violence, most especially at schools and am mostly in agreement with what Sen Murphy has to say. Let me put out front, however, that I am concerned with his use of the term “incremental change.” I would not want to see laws proposed that are put out as a trojan horse that transform to a wish list of progressive gun ban steppingstones.
Although I don’t believe he mentions bump stocks here, I do believe their sale to the public should be made illegal along with machine guns. I am shocked – if it is true as reported – that a person just turned 18 years of age could so quickly purchase and obtain the weapons he did at Uvalde. Either the background check law was seriously flawed or the law was not obeyed. As a follow-on to that, I also believe that red flag laws and measures are warranted. Placing the legal age for gun purchases at 21 vs 18 would not, to me, be unreasonable either. Background checks should be required for any gun purchase – at gun shops or shows or privately. I won’t here try to be exhaustive of what laws should be implemented or enforced but will instead address issues which I believe have long been ignored or, at bet, given short shrift.
First of all, violent games that focus on killing others should be banned and what I would call dark social media, that which directs thoughts of either young or old to killing, should also go. Our society has gone far afield away from moral thinking and action.
Secondly, no public place should be rendered as an enclosed killing space, schools most especially. They should be both hardened and protected. In short, do our best to implement tightly written and enforced laws and then, because sick minds will always be with us and do not recognize laws, both watch for them and take their targets away.

Gun laws work no better than drug laws. GunFreeZones invite killers. No place should be a gun free zone unless guarded by competent armed guards. We can afford Special Prosecutors who never prosecute anyone important. OUTLAW them and spend the money to guard our children. Not one school where the Senators children go, ALL schools. Chain link fences well back from the school with a guard.

Would they ban all knives because some people kill with knives, or bricks because you might throw one and it may kill someone, or all cars because they can kill people? The problem is that PEOPLE kill people. It’s a moral issue. When there are no consequences, immoral people will repeat the offense. And when you reduce the police force and the consequences, they tend to repeat the offense. Guns can be used for good or evil. Your first clue about the motives behind that bill is that it is misnamed.

I'm just sick and tired of the knee jerk comments about more gun laws. We must blame ourselves for the maniacs shooting at will. For years we allowed leftists to take and push God out of our schools, our public places and they would also like to shut down our churches. We allowed it by not wanting to rock the boat. Now we better get to work and reverse the damage, by first enforcing all the laws we have. There should also be real punishment and jail time for the offenders, whether it be looters arsonists, politicians and protesters who smash, and do anything that breaks the law. Our young people today have no moral compass. No wonder they commit suicide. Turning back to our Judeo Christian way of living would cure many of our problems. Impeachment is a start for a president who willfully won't do anything for the benefit of "We the People".

I don't think raising the age requirement compromises the 2A, but not sure that would do much good. Our culture has raised a lot of immature irresponsible teens and twenties, but raising the age limit would punish those responsibe-type young adults.

Enhanced school security, teachers and/or Administration carry weapons, and increased mental health screening are the only useful steps to curb these types of shootings. The rest are useless and likely unconstitutional.
