The House Judiciary Committee will hold an emergency meeting today to put together a bill that will reportedly include eight new gun control measures. It includes “proposals to raise the minimum age for purchasing a semi-automatic weapon from 18 to 21, ban ‘high capacity magazines,’ establish a registry for bump stocks and more.” True to form, it’s not called the “Gun Control Omnibus Act” but the “Protect Our Kids Act.” So when you hear that term, you’ll know what it actually is.

Never let it be said that we don’t listen to all sides of an issue. Here’s an op-ed by Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut, detailing what he says are some small changes that could be made to gun laws and increasing support for mental health that could help reduce gun violence and prevent school shootings and that members of both parties could agree on.

I invite you to read what he has to say and tell us in the comments whether you would be willing to compromise on such measures, whether you think they would help, and why or why not.

For more, here’s Derek Hunter of Townhall.com analyzing a New York Times editorial demanding more gun control and explaining the holes in their thinking.

In his inimitable way, Kurt Schlichter explains that the problem isn’t a lack of gun laws, it’s a shortage of duty and accountability.

Finally, the uncle of one of the young victims of the Uvalde school shooting spoke out against people using their family’s name to promote more anti-gun laws. He said their own family are responsible gun owners, and they believe enhanced security at schools is a far better solution.

I have often wondered why the powers that be never go after one of the major contributors of this type of violence. Children have been de-sensitized to violence and the consequences of pulling a trigger by video games that glorify that type of violence. Parents are complacent in buying and allowing the game console to babysit their children. I sincerely believe that removing these 'games' from the market would go a long way towards getting to the roots of these types of problems. Children should be taught from an early age the consequences of pulling a trigger. Firearm safety starts with the parents and not a video game programmer eating Twinkies in his parents basement. Too many of the mass shooters have been described as quiet and having no friends always keeping to themselves, families need to get involved with all their members and not allow these children to fall through the cracks and isolate themselves.

In response to measures for more gun control the first thing that needs to happen is those legally judged mentally deficient and not eligible to purchase a gun needs to be added to the instant check. Don't give those people more "help" and spend more money on them, Add their name to the list of those ineligible to buy a gun. If they try to buy a gun, prosecute them. I do understand HIPPA protects people's medical information but If it saved just one life...

Are they going to raise the draft age, and age to join the military to twenty-one also?

I would like first to thank you for presenting news without the mainstream media spin. Regarding the issue of more gun laws and the supposed lack of bipartisan support, I don't understand why democrats continue to keep beating the same tired drum every time one of these shootings occur. I would like to see the age to purchase raised to at least 21 for all gun sales. I am hard pressed to see how gun store owners can determine if a buyer of any age is mentally ok. Are democrats wanting every gun store owner to also have a masters degree in psychology? Nothing is being done to harden the school buildings which is what would be the best immediate start. Metal detectors in every school and no one but teachers and students allowed entry into buildings once classes start. Why does the mere mention of metal detectors in schools send school board administrators into a frenzy? Background checks are good only to keep felons from purchasing but there is nothing in place to my knowledge to assess mental issues.

Enough of these ‘tried before, didn’t work’ gun laws’! School security, armed SRO guys, certified teachers, LOCKED doors (if a teacher/staff leaves any door propped open, unpaid leave, suspension or fired! Hit ‘em where it hurts!)

    1) Senator Murphy, addressing the number of gun deaths, needs to look at the recent past.... what caused the spike?
A: Soros backed prosecutors who do not prosecute.
Criminals will escalate their crimes if they are not held responsible.
    2) MOST agree on red flag laws....... I don't agree at this stage.
    3) Mental health - definitely! If someone is cruel to animals, their unhealthy attitude cannot be accepted in daily society. (Added plus... reduces homeless population)
We cannot come together on this except 1 step at a time and with open dialogue (debate), and an informed (not indoctrinated) public.
Thank you for asking my opinion.
Too many times my representatives will contact me for money to help them do their job, and my opinion is relegated to yes or no and a donation for them to receive my 'opinion'.

No way would I give up my 2nd amendment rights for any reason. I believe it was Thomas Jefferson who said that "if you give up your rights for security you deserve neither". Once you give up your rights, they will look to take even more. How far that will go will only depend on how far we're willing to go defending our rights . That should bthat should be a no brainer when it comes to making that decision.

For any new legislation, there should be evidence that the new law would have prevented loss of life. I am in favor of raising the legal limit for gun purchases. I am in favor of requiring a background check for each gun purchase. After that, I would need serious convincing that other laws are effective.

Sen Murphy said: " ... I think we all agree that the Constitution allows Congress to decide which weapons are so dangerous as to be kept exclusively in the hands of the military." . I disagree to a point. Civilian gun owners are already not allowed to have any weapons that "are so dangerous" that they need to be made illegal to own. I can only assume he is referring to the AR15 style of rifles. It irks me that for over the decades the left cannot let it sink into their heads that it's simple a rifle, it just looks different than a wooden stocked rifle. These rifles are no more deadly than any other rifle of the same caliber and they come in nearly every caliber that can be found being made today.

On the subject of background checks, I fail to see how this is in any way pertinent to the reasons for these mentally ill did what they did. The Uvalde shooter bought the rifles legally meaning he passed the background checks already in place. With that said Sen Murphy wants to " ... tightening up our background checks system" meaning what? More intrusion into everyday citizens lives when we have passed numerous laws that prohibit institutionalizing the truly mental people? We can't allow school kids mental health records to be seen when there is a possibility to intervene but once they turn 18 they can get a gun because of that lack of reporting those records to the FBI? That's more democratic BS actually to put the burden on everyone instead of the minority that needs the attention.

Turning schools into daytime prisons seems to be the only practical solution since we don't encourage and even make illegal the idea of authoritarianism style discipline both in the home and in schools. Psychologists have convinced everyone that children are delicate. They aren't. I know because I was a child. I had familial hardships, emotional trauma (bullying) from classmates, and was passed back and forth from parent (singular) to paternal grandparents every year. Did i suffer? Hell no! It was what it was. It's called learning to adapt.

The 2nd amendment is to allow us to have arms to protect us from the tyrants who want to take our guns and other rights. The wording does not limit the type of weapon to just hunting and self protection. I feel the Taxes already levied hamper our rights as is. I agree that criminals who use any type of weapon should be caught and punished (not law abiding citizens) Enforce the existing laws. remove taxes and stamp requirements on guns, attachments, ammunition, etc. The ATF is just a arm of the force to disarm us, and should have its power limited to criminal activities as the department was designed.
