The government has to have money to pay for the military, cover the cost of obligations we’ve made like Medicare and Social Security, and build roads, bridges, and airports.  We need some things government does so clearly there has to be a tax process.  But the one we have is a detriment to our economy.  What if there was a tax plan that was flat, fair, and family-friendly?  There is one.  It’s called the Fair Tax, and it would super-charge our economy, but it is terribly misunderstood and opponents say it would raise your taxes.  It wouldn’t.  It’s pretty simple, really.  You wouldn’t be taxed for your work, savings, inheritance, or good business decisions.  The Fair Tax would be collected at the point of purchase instead of the point of production.  The current tax system is essentially a penalty on what you produce.  We tax your work in the form of an income or payroll tax.  And if you work for someone else, your money is taxed before you even get it.   It’s taken out of your check before you even cash it.  Most people don’t have any idea how much they actually pay in taxes because they never see it.  And how nice of you to let the government take your money and use it all year interest free.  The Fair Tax is essentially a sales tax or more broadly a consumption tax.  You only pay when you purchase something that is new and hasn’t been taxed before.

Presently we punish productivity and subsidize irresponsibility. If I invest in something that increases in value which means I made a smart investment, I pay capital gains taxes.  But if I invest in something that loses money, I can write that off of my taxes.  Get that?  Successful investments are punished; failed investments are rewarded.  Only the government could create something so absurd!

What makes a strong economy?  Work, investments in businesses, savings—even putting aside money to leave for your family to get started with a house or a business.  And maybe saving enough to give to charity at one’s death.  But we tax all of that.  If you spend all your money on stupid stuff or just don’t work,  the government will help out with your medical bills and provide a check so you can stay home and play video games.  Now here’s a simple principle:  If there is a behavior you want more of, reward it; if there is a behavior you want less of, punish it.  That’s how we raise children and train dogs.  Do the trick and get the treat.  But our tax system is the opposite of that.  Punish productivity and reward irresponsibility.

The fair tax changes that by letting you keep the money you earn, invest or save.  It eliminates the income tax, capital gains tax, and the death tax.  You pay taxes when you buy something.  And it completely eliminates the IRS.  They would be disbanded.  Don’t want to pay as much tax? Don’t buy stuff.

But you know who DOESN’T pay income tax, capital gains or inheritance tax like you do?  Prostitutes, pimps, drug dealers, and gamblers.  They don’t fill out forms in April and tell the government how much they made selling crack to Hunter Biden!  So you are paying YOUR taxes and theirs.  But if we paid tax when we purchased things, the prostitutes, pimps, drug dealers and gamblers would pay tax because they still buy stuff.  Sometimes lots of stuff that you can’t afford.

The Fair Tax was created by a group of some of the most brilliant economists in the country.  They were charged with proposing the fairest and most efficient form of getting the money the government needs without creating a tax code that is so complicated even the IRS doesn’t understand it and you need accountants and lawyers just to comply with it.  With the Fair Tax, there are no tax returns.  Nothing is taken out of your check.  For most of you, for the first time in your life you’d get your entire pay check and April 15 would just be another beautiful Spring Day.

In the coming weeks, I’ll tell you more about the Fair Tax because there are a lot of people in government who don’t want it since it takes away the power to manipulate the tax code to reward political donors and punish political enemies. I feel pretty sure I can help you understand that the system we have now needs to be thrown out and a new plan put in place that’s fair, flat, and family friendly.  And did I mention, it eliminates the IRS?

This makes so much sense and has since I first learned about it from the debate stage when you explained it when you first ran for president. If the public understood it and were able to vote on it you know it would pass in a landslide, but alas the folks in charge won't let this one out of the bag.

Living in Guatemala, where they have IVA, aka VAT (Value Added Tax), I love it! You pay taxes when you purchase something, just like you spoke of. I love going to the store and seeing a price on something and actually paying that price when I check out. No additional 5%, 7% or 10% added to the bill for the government, it's all included in the purchase price. Truth in pricing and paying your taxes simply and easily, what a concept!

I love it (Fair Tax) and have loved it since inception but it will never get passed. My congressman Woodall way back visited me and said we would at least get a vote years ago and it got squashed. Even this year we were to get it to a vote but Congress will not even allow it to get to a committee to then get to the floor to separate the men from the boys (to many rules to avoid getting the good things done) . You are right lot more education needs to be given but your newsletter is preaching to the folks who want it. What can be done to get Congress on record for a yes or no. Speaker McCarthy talks in circles or pushes it off to someone else to say no and hide behind. All of the typing in the world will not move the thieves to a vote as they loose power if this is instated. One execution is worth a thousand ideas but they will never let it happen.

Recently groups of people, from politicians to everyday people, have been touting the idea of the “Fair Tax” or “Consumption Tax”. It could also be called a “National Sales Tax”. While this might sound good, there are a few problems with implementing this new Federal Taxing system.
History shows us that rarely does any level of government, federal, state, or local, get rid of a source of income. Predominately they only add revenue sources. Can we really expect the Federal government to abolish the IRS or any agency?
If a sales tax could supply the revenue a government needed provide all the services required, then why are there so many states that have both a sales tax and an individual income tax? Out of the 50 states, only 12 have either an income or sales tax. Of those 12 only 2 do not have either. That means 38 states have both, even your beloved Arkansas.
The lower the income the person or family makes the greater the impact the sales tax has. Especially when there is inflation, but income does not increase equally with the rate of inflation.
Like most things, the sales pitch makes an item sound perfect and like something we cannot live without. Though when the item is bought, buyers remorse usually sets in when it does not live up to the promises made.

Your idea of a "Fair Tax" sounds good to me, but I need to know more details about it. Would it produce the money the government needs to do its work? I'll stop here an find out what you have to say.

Believe me, if we were to adopt a fair tax system, our government would find a way to screw it up to where we would still need the IRS. I would really like a flat tax. But in our governments twisted thinking we could not understand something so simple. Along with a flat tax we need a revamped government that will be easy to use and understand

I'm not specifically against the "Fair Tax," but since I (and others on Social Security/fixed low income) already pay existing sales tax~ and pay 0 Income tax, wouldn't I be paying out more $ overall than I am currently? A lot of us have trouble just making ends meet as it is.

Exactly!! Those who escape taxes now will pay when they purchase. I've been saying this for years. People with lots of money spend on expensive items. They, in turn, pay 'their fair share', while those of us with less, aren't buying fancy cars , Gucci bags, $10,000 gowns, etc. No, it doesn't hurt the lower and middle class.
Easy to implement? Yes, they ring up sales taxes when you purchase and send it to the state, do the same with federal tax.

I have been a proponent of the Fair Tax for 20 years. Unfortunately, the Dems do not feel it is progressive enough. They still think that those making more should pay more and those making less should pay less. The Fair Tax also has a PRE-bate of a certain amount based upon size of family for food and housing. For families making little income and most of their income going to housing and food, they would be exempt. I think it is a great idea, but I don't see it being successful.
