Update:

Our original story included a link to the Defense Department's denial of claims that any military service dogs were left behind, but Lead Stories now has more details to confirm that.

https://leadstories.com/hoax-alert/2021/09/fact-check-the-united-states-did-not-leave-behind-military-working-dogs-in-cages-in-afghanistan.html

On Tuesday, we commented on a story from an organization called American Humane, which works to rescue military working dogs and place veterans with service dogs, about U.S. military dogs being left behind in Afghanistan. We didn’t know if it was true and said we’d try to find other sources confirming this. Tuesday evening on Tucker Carlson’s show, he said the SPCA had confirmed that the Biden administration has chosen to leave the dogs behind.

“In the end,” the SPCA said, “the dogs and their caretakers were explicitly NOT allowed to board military aircraft, and numerous private charter aircraft were not granted access to the airport, either.”

If this is true, about 200 of these very special dogs are presumably doomed by the decision to leave them behind. But the U.S. military is saying this claim is “erroneous.”

A spokesperson for U.S. Central Command, U.S. Army Lt. Col. Karen Roxberry, said in an email that the “priority mission was the evacuation of U.S. citizens, SIV [Special Immigrant Visas] and vulnerable Afghans,” but she also stated that reports about leaving dogs behind were in error. She said the photos circulating online (perhaps including those Tucker had on his show, showing dogs in carriers) were not of dogs under the care of the U.S. military but rather the Kabul Small Animal Rescue.

So what’s the story? And what dogs were in the custody of Kabul Small Animal Rescue, and what happens to them? Honestly, we can't say for sure. Those are probably shelter dogs and former pets of evacuees, and they likely face cruelty and extermination by the Taliban, who think of dogs as unclean and typically kill them. But the government insists all the military dogs were evacuated, that none were left behind.

Let's hope that’s true. I wish we could take our government at their word, but these are also the people who said no American would be left behind.

Wouldn't have happened with our real commander, President Donald J. Trump.
Exterminate the whole democratic admin. Send Psaki to Afghanistan. I hear that they treat the women well.

Thank you for covering this part of the debacle that effected innocent animals.
There were 130, non military working and some trained bomb sniffing dogs, pets left by evacuees, contractors and Afghani refugees/SIVs, left behind. The Global SPCA and American Charlotte Baker, founder KSAR have confirmed this fact. They were ordered released into a sealed off airport, in 100 degree temps, that would be overrun with Taliban in less than 12 hours. Disgraceful.
It was an inhumane order and one I think we will be able to trace to Mckenzie. It was wrong to order troops to carry out this inhumane order. I, for one, would not have and I would have spoken out. Perhaps some service member will when they realize the sell out they were part of at the hands of incompetent senior officers.

Once again, the government is parsing words.

regarding the K-9’s and were they left behind or not, remember this: those saying they were NOT left behind are the same ones who have lied about every other thing regarding this debacle. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice (or thrice or more), shame on me. As for me, until the actual handlers are allowed and able to speak freely, I’ll go with they were left behind.

I along with many others, have come to realize that we can't believe a word our government says! I am disgusted with our government officials and if they have left ANY dog behind, I hope they reap what they have sown in their evil cruelty to innocent animals! May they suffer the rest of their lives on this earth and on throughout Eternity because they are nothing short of MONSTERS!

I love dogs. I have two, so this comment has nothing to do with my feelings about dogs. I've heard other statements from those I trust who have served, that leaving these dogs was a mixed bag of facts. Please check your story out a little further. Thank you. Appreciate you and your staff Gov. Huckabee. (Do not fully trust SPCA)

I served two enlistments with the US Navy, one active duty and one as a reservist, and 20 years as a police officer, 23 years total in public safety.. I never imagined I'd be this disgusted with what my country has become...
