After six votes Wednesday, holdouts were still refusing to back Rep. Kevin McCarthy, and the House voted to adjourn and reconvene later today. Reports are that negotiations continued last night with some possible progress. The New York Times, citing confidential sources, claims that McCarthy “privately agreed to more demands from the right-wing rebels that he had previously refused to countenance, including allowing a single lawmaker to force a snap vote at any time to oust him from the speakership.”

McCarthy has offered an astounding number of concessions, listed here by Victoria Taft at PJ Media.

The Club For Growth has also reportedly cut a deal with a super PAC associated with McCarthy that could result in them endorsing him as Speaker.

Fox News has comments from Florida Rep. Byron Donalds, the latest alternative proposed for McCarthy.

As noted in the article, until there’s a Speaker, the new House can’t even be sworn in, so this is preventing necessary action from being taken on many fronts.

McCarthy’s detractors still have no alternative candidate who is more conservative and can attract enough votes to win. They keep pointing to the last time conservatives forced McCarthy to withdraw in 2015, but back then, a dark horse “unity” candidate stepped forward and won. Considering that was Paul Ryan, whom they now vilify as a squishy, Trump-hating RINO, it’s not exactly a ringing endorsement for this strategy.

This is a continuing (and continuing!) story, so keep checking the regularly updated Fox News feed for the latest developments.

One thing to note:  While the 10% wants to rule over the 90% (who has ever allowed that or thought it was the way elections work?), it’s revealing that some of the holdouts have said in interviews that what they are “demanding” of Kevin McCarthy is that they get choice committee assignments and a promise they won’t be punished for their attempted coup.  That’s not only delusional, but very telling.  If a person is objecting by sheer principle, one is willing to suffer whatever the consequences for the rebellion.  When a person says, “Hey, this is about ME…protecting MY position, MY role in leadership, and MY being able to take any shot I want at 90% of my colleagues and have no consequence other than being rewarded.”  THAT my friend is NOT acting on “principle.”  It’s a selfish act of a power grab and publicity stunt.  Reward THAT behavior and you’ll keep getting more of it in the future.

I am sorry that you take the position that you take with the Speaker Issue and that you fail to understand where so many of us have strong positions and that we don't want to fold. There may only be 20 in the Congress but there are so many more of us it the real world.

It is time to take a position and stick with it. Kevin McCarthy has promised a lot of things...one that sticks in my mind is that he has promised to investigate all of these people. Mike, they have already investigated what seems like half the world. And they continue to investigate. But they never...no never charge anyone with anything. Especially if it is an elected official. They investigate and all that they do is give the deep state a platform to make speeches!

It is time to shake things up. It is time to let the bottom fall out of the deep state. So what if Kevin McCarthy is not the Speaker...so what if another becomes the Speaker. I am a solid Conservative and long time Republican...all of my life. But it is time to let the privileged elite know that they do not have our support. Let them fail!

Kevin McCarthy is nothing but another Mitch McConnell and they should both be gone!

If they end up recruiting from outside, I feel that you (Gov. Mike) have enough integrity and chutzpah to round in the sheep and keep them on task!

McCarthy should quit given in to all demands of those opposing him, especially that anything less than 100 people can call for a new vote. Those in apposition of him are showing the American voter’s that they have no business being in Congress to begin with, let them make fools of themselves. They will be up for election again and just maybe they will be voted out of office.

Occurred to me to research Rep. McCarthy. Came away with excellent voting record. Voting more than political lines or even conscience. He votes for truth!!! Why if i can do this don't his fellows in the US House look his RECORD over and not just him? It would seem there is more at work here??? Get off your “gimmies” House-and give for a change. That is what we taxed peoples are paying you for.

Sounds like the hold outs are Democrats in Republican clothing.

Are the Republicans a bunch of disorganized fools? It sure seems that way. Once they had secured a majority in the House, they should have gotten busy preparing their agenda for saving America! Selecting a Speaker should have been number one on the list! They should have been ready to hit the ground running! I'm disappointed to say the least.

Agree with what you're saying about the hold-outs in this process. I''m no fan of Kevin M. and view him as doing more of the same. I'd sure like to see what he's willing to support in his 'secret negotiations' to see if it will get the GOP to change their apathetic behavior and aggressively go after the biggest issues that I view such as the Trump Russia collusion hoax / FISA fraud and the malfeasance seen in the Executive Branch agencies with First Ammendment violations recently revealed with Twitter. This country desperately needs to get rid of the election machines and mail-in voting that has enabled corrupt elections on both sides. We also need term limits and formal public independent ethics oversight of the Executive Branch agencies similar to what local governments implement with the Grand Jury process. All proceeding should be on CSPAN and web-streamed.

I support the 10% in this case, Gov. I am tired of the "business as usual" attitude in DC and want to see some change. I want to see term limits brought to the House floor! I want that particular issue forced! Their other demands don't catch my eye near as much. But, they have brought up a few things which McCarthy should gladly accept. McCarthy needs to be able to build a consensus rather than ignoring what these want. Perhaps he is listening now. I appreciate the process we are seeing. But McCarthy would have been better off not to treat this 10% so flippantly to begin with!

Please stop drinking the Kool aide and come back into the light and not the darkness you are selling your soul too. They are not hold outs, they are true American Patriots that actually listen to their constituents and have both integrity, and courage. You supporting the left side should hang your head in shame and ask God to forgive your transgressions of embracing the glasses of Satan.

I think you are wrong that a minority should not have veto power over the majority. In the Senate, a single Senator can stop the progress of the Senate. A single renegade candidate for President can block the re-election of an incumbent (George HW Bush). There is great power in self-sacrifice for true believers. I am dismayed by the unfair attacks on fellow Republicans. The Democrats vote like a flock of lemmings; shouldn’t we celebrate the independent thinkers who put their reputation on the line? Look, the House is not scheduled to be in session until the 23rd, so what’s the problem? No business of the House is being stopped. Any time I see the media, Democrats, establishment Republicans and political pundits all in agreement, it makes me want to hear more from the voices of dissent. The valid and necessary concessions gained so far, would not have happened without this small group of true believers. Kinda like the very small group of true believer disciples attempting to convince the world of a better way…. The true way.
