Note: Col. Ken Allard, USA (Ret.) is a former Cold War intelligence officer, West Point faculty member and Dean of the National War College. He also served for ten years as an on-air military analyst for NBC News.

My heart aches for the 12 Marines and one Navy corpsman killed yesterday in Kabul. Even more for their 13 families awaiting that life-changing visit from serving officers in dress uniforms; bringing the official notification that their loved one gave his life carrying out a noble but badly flawed mission. But there is something especially tragic about Marines engaged in a mercy mission, pitilessly targeted by suicide bombers committing war crimes under the guise of religious obligation.

General Jim Mattis is most closely identified with the slogan, “No better friend, no worse enemy” to describe the marine’s warrior ethos. An alite force of naval infantry, marines deploy on the toughest missions: to seize an island, to assault a beach-head - or to rectify an impossible situation created by a singularly inept president. Sadly, that was the situation in which these hapless marines found themselves: guarding the over-crowded cul-de-sac where the truly desperate scrambled madly for escape. Making these uncertainties infinitely worse was that baseline security was supposedly provided by the Taliban, our sworn enemies since 9-11.

How had it come to this? From the commander-in-chief on down through the entire chain-of-command, effective performance depends on many factors but this above all: Has this admiral or general, commander or colonel set the conditions that will ensure the deployed forces have their greatest chance of success? That unforgiving calculus begins at the service academies, continues through the staff colleges and identifies the elites who attend the war colleges and ultimately fill command billets. Regardless of service, these flag officers have learned to construct forces best geared to prevail in their missions, balancing its components on air, land and sea. An equally important question: What forces will flow to the theater of operations and in which order? And when Murphy’s Law always kicks in, what will you do about it?

Unfortunately, we live in an age of rampant military illiteracy where less than half of one percent of all Americans ever serve in uniform. Military history is an unknown subject in most colleges and may permanently disqualify you from applying for journalism school. Joe Biden embodies that legacy of ignorance, made even worse by his 50 years of service as a legislator. Compromising values is a routine legislative strategy where the most fundamental differences are routinely split down the middle. With that training, Biden always sounds like a pandering poseur when he threatens to use military force. Like yesterday, when according to The Federalist, he swore, “Those who carried out this attack and anyone who wishes America harm know this, we will not forgive…We will not forget. We will hunt you down to make you pay. I will defend our interests and our people with every measure at my command.” Think our enemies believed him, that their sandals trembled at the fearsome prospect of having annoyed the ferocious Joe Biden? Nope, I don’t either.

The munchkins surrounding him went out of their way to assure Americans that now is not the time for recriminations, that our entire focus must be on de-constructing the artful trap which Biden willfully engineered. While Kabul suffers agonies, Washington endlessly dissembles. To hear Biden tell it, they deliberately bypassed the Bagram air base - one of the biggest in the region - because Kabul’s sole airstrip was closer and more convenient. Seriously, fellas? That they reversed the natural order of operations, removing the bulk of American combat power while leaving the teeming multitudes for last? In what war college do they teach that concept? Even worse: The Daily Wire reported on Wednesday that the US is leaving behind for Taliban use some 70,000 vehicles, 600,000 vehicles and 208 aircraft. The article by Joseph Curl quoted one authority, “We built them a pretty amazing war chest and now all of it is in the hands of the Taliban.” Bottom Line: Biden set the conditions for failure, not success.

His presidential ineptitude may have its greatest effect when our enemies test our open southern border, now stripped of all its defenses. When they do, remember that the 2020 electoral defeat of Donald Trump will cast an even larger shadow in American history than the looming towers of 9-11.

Mr. Allard, your words and assessment, are sadly spot-on. As soon as President Trump took office the Democrats collectively said he had to be impeached, just because they didn't like him. President Biden was voted into office by ignorant people who disliked President Trump simply because they believed what the media said of him. President Trump was correct on every front. He loves and believes in the Greatness of America. President Biden is a puppet. He and his whole administration should ALL be DEPOSED and President Trump should be go back as this nations leader!

Good article. One of the things ignored by many is just what a military strategic location Afghanistan is in. And it has many natural resources such as natural gas. Russia would like a pipe line for natural gas, and a pipe line for oil from Iran. And the Chinese seek the same things. One has to wonder why we left military weapons, vehicles, planes and supplies behind? But the big question is why are we not destroying them now?!! Is Biden leaving them there on purpose? And for whom? Civilians left behind can become hostages for money or political bargaining chips. And those hostages, their cell phones, laptops and hard drives can be seized to gain classified information, blackmail, financial info and access which could be used to support terrorism. I might be a little paranoid, but I am starting to feel this all may have been done on purpose.

    Mt. Huckabee,
Thank you for this great article. Col. Allard, myself and you agree on in thing, this administration has no clue. But it was something that you said on your show recently that really brought this home to me. You said that they acted more like the Three Stooges but those three did it better. At least, the Three Stooges perfected their craft at acting silly, ridiculous and stupid. This bunch doesn't need any practice. They make Moe, Curly and Joe look polished.

As the daughter of a WWII veteran, I am heartbroken to see how this has turned out. This is not the America that my dad and others risked or gave up their lives for. Thank you for your service and all that you are doing.

Sincerely, Selma B Watson, RRT, CPFT

Col. Allard: Praising you for using your voice and your wealth of experience to speak to terrified, confused, angry people across the earth. "How could this disaster happen?" is on everyone's mind. "What do we do now?" And on and on. The hurt of watching this mess is physical as well as spiritual, but we all know--it is going to get a lot worse. We need more voices like your's raised above the screaming, ignorant hordes. Thank you for your thoughtful commentary. I will share widely.

    Dear Col. Allard,
Thank you for your service & your insights. I agree with everything you said. Hard to say how this could have been a worse plan which appeared to put our troops in more danger. They were confined to the airport in Kabul which the Taliban had complete control of---a very large target in a confined space. Apparently, this is all Biden would authorize. Yet, DOD Sec'y Austin, Gen. Milley, Gen. MacKenzie & Gen. Taylor seemed to support this. I keep wondering if they are all inept or untruthful or both. I feel both Biden AND these commanders are to blame for the tragic deaths of our military personnel. It seems to me like it just didn't need to happen. I have lost a son under tragic circumstances, not the military. I am sure the families of those lost are also thinking, "This didn't need to happen." I know what a bitter pill that is to swallow when losing a loved one with that weighing on your mind. Grief and bereavement are hard enough without additional complications. To me this entire operation from removing existing troops before any civilians to relying on the enemy Taliban for "their permission and good will" was a debacle leading to a catastrophe. When has the US military ever relied on our enemies? This entire situation seems to me should be taught in all the service academies as 101: In How Not to Conduct a Military Operation. I am sorry if I have in any way been disrespectful to the military or the good Generals, but how could this happen? Many of us know Biden is an IDIOT and cannot make sound decisions, accept advice or process information. I just expected more backbone and better tactics from the military leadership. I keep asking myself, if this had to go so wrong for the troops on the ground? I hope you will submit another column and give us more of your insight. Thank you so much.

Was a good article until I found spelling errors.
These 'errors' could change the meaning of the story,
therefore, I skimmed over the story to get the 'gist' of
what the writer was talking about.
What ever happened to "Proof-Reading" a story?

First of all, sir, let me say thank you for your service.

Now, I am sure that Jimmy Carter is pleased with Joe Biden, who has categorically removed any doubt who the most inept president in history is.

Thank you for your insight regarding our military and how it should be utilized.

Col. Allard- THANK YOU for clear analysis of this horrible situation. You are 100% correct. Regular congresspeople make terrible presidents-they ARE all about compromise, accept only part of what is needed and move on to the next thing. I am happy to see many more people in Congress who served in various branches of the military and that they are speaking out loudly now. Biden is --so phony. Dragging out his son Beau's death doesn't make it easier for the families of the 13 people killed. The moment of silence equally bad. Most of all-the threats of -we will hunt you down--and crazily Jen Psaki today saying that means they will no longer live on this earth--most unfortunately=empty posturing. And now a question-- if we kept Guantanamo in Cuba, why couldn't we keep Bagrum? It seems to be in a hugely useful and strategic position for future intel. You said all of this even better- but as a patriotic grandmother who is frustrated and fearful of the world my grandchildren will grow up in, I needed to voice some concerns too. Because I agree--the defeat of Trump in 2020 will have lasting consequences.

The stain of our soldiers lost will forever be the legacy of those who voted for Joe Biden. All we have now is hope and prayer that we won't have another Gold Star family created.
