Happy New Year!  I can’t speak for you, but I’m glad we’re moving out of 2022.  Highest inflation in over 40 years, fuel prices double from when Donald Trump was President, interest rates climbing, a border that is easier to get through than a wet paper towel, and a lazy and irresponsible media that lies to you every day and pretends they are telling you the truth.

But one thing that has been a wonderful part of 2022 is that my wife and I started the year with 2 wonderful new puppies.  We actually got them the week between Christmas and New Year’s.

Gumbo is a Cavalier King Charles/Bichon mix and Bandit is a Shi-Tzu/Bichon mix.  They aren’t blood brothers, but don’t tell them that.  They are virtually inseparable. The love to wrestle, chase each other, and sometimes make big messes.  But these boys have brought a lot of joy to our lives in a year that otherwise would have been at times rather depressing.

I often say “I wouldn’t live in a world without dogs,” and I really mean it.  During the past year, these 2 guys have taken more of my time than I had, caused me to do a lot of cleaning up behind them, replacing things they chewed up, and trying to figure out what they’re barking at.   But through it all, they have given a level of loyalty I sure never experienced in politics, and a steadfast love that is a true taste of God’s unfailing love for us.

You may wonder why I’d start my 2023 newsletter talking about my dogs.  And the honest answer is, “Because I could!”

But there’s method to the madness.  I’m convinced that dogs bring people together.  It’s hard to frown when looking into the eyes of a puppy.  It’s hard to think about harsh divisions in our nation and world when holding a puppy in your lap. So I just think a lot of our problems would be solved if people got a dog.  Maybe Democrats and Republicans would still disagree, but not be hateful about it.  And dogs can teach us a lot about being patient as well as grateful for even the smallest thing, like a tiny treat.

I don’t mean to imply that all of 2022 has been unpleasant.  Our daughter got elected Governor of Arkansas and will sit in the old seat I sat in.  She will be sworn in in less than 2 weeks and start her own journey of leading our state.  We’re proud of all three of our children, but they have their own lives and careers.  We do as much baby-sitting of our 7 grandchildren as we are allowed, but when they aren’t there, having the dogs fills the house with activity, love, and of course noise.  Lots of noise.

Some of our friends thought we were crazy to get two dogs at the same time, but it just doubled our delight to watch them grow, play, and show us their unconditional love.  So, we’re starting 2023 with hope and anticipation and year-old puppies that got us through this past year.  From Janet and me and Gumbo and Bandit, Happy New Year, and may God give you a great year, and maybe a puppy of your own!

What a coincidence that you talked about your dogs.
We just got home from the Vet after losing our precious little Maltese. We still have our little Pomeranian who will be almost as lost as we are. Starting the New Year with a broken heart isn't exactly what we planned. I can't even imagine life without dogs!! Give yours an extra hug tonight and tell them how much you love them! In time, we'll get another playmate for the Pom. I sure hope there are dogs in Heaven....!

Blessings and joy to you and your wife, Janet, for a truly wonderful New Year! I'm so happy for you both that you have brought these precious fur babies into your home. I 'm sure they have nabbed a special place in your heart! We also adopted a 9 yr. old Golden Retriever gal who was previously a "momma breeding gal" from a reputable breeder. After having lost our previous 15 yr. old Golden gal, our new gal, Heidi, has brought us great joy and comfort throughout the tumultuous 2022 year. Dogs are, indeed, a blessing from our Lord!

You are so right. Have always had a dog(s. I’m a believer. God knew we humans need a warm welcome when we come home. My present dog is 15 +. Got him at pound when 2 years old fleas and all. He was so scared. We had always had labs but Freddie is a maltipoo. I’m 92 and will care for him as long as the Good Lord gives me.

Congratulations Governor Huckabee and to your wife! I always tell people that I love my Westies more than I love people most of the time. Is that so wrong? We lost our near 17-year-old Westie in October this past year and our 9-year-old Westie was very depressed as we were too. The opportunity arose several days after the death of our almost 17-year-old to adopt one of the breeders' mommas that is 5 years old. We thought about it for several weeks and then decided to go ahead and do it. She has brought us and the 9-year-old Westie much joy and we've only had her a few short weeks. She is so much like a puppy even though she is 5 years old. Everything is new to her because her previous life was one of being bred, kept in a kennel, and we don't think she had ever experienced just running in the yard to chase squirrels, having a dog bed, or having boiled chicken for treats. It has taken several weeks to just convince her that it's ok to lie down in a doggie bed. She is keeping us on our toes at our 60ish years, but we wouldn't have it any other way! Here's to more people realizing how precious having a dog can be in this new year. God bless you and your family.

Congratulations and hugs to Gumbo & Bandit. After God called my husband home I was left with our old Boxer, Sugar, who was in her late years of 16. After she could no longer walk I had to make THAT decision. Difficult as it was Sugar went to join our other Boxers who had succumbed before her. A friend of mine came to visit one day with a dog carrier that contained brother and sister miniature Schnauzers. He knew that I needed Sugar replacement. What he didn't know was that I could not just choose one. I couldn't separate those two sweeties. One was grey and the regular markings except she had one ear that always stayed flopped over. The male was a solid black. God guided me and they were my best friends for all of their 12 and 14 lives. Sophie went first as she had diabetes and went into having seizures. Sammy stayed with me for another 2 years until cancer robbed him of his hind legs. Okay...this is long but I am convinced that when you are able to get siblings, do it. They were the best of friends. I now have my son and his daughter living with me and they acquired CHUGS (Chihuaha & Pug mix) Ruby is the baby and Tader is big bro. Same issues as with all pups - little and big messes but still advise to always get siblings when you can!! Love and happiness to you all.
