After I said that if we formed a third party we’d never, ever win another presidential election, EVER, I received quite a few letters from readers who think differently. Here’s a typical one...

From Stephen R:

You say that you’re against a third party and that we’d never again win an election if that happens. I totally disagree! If we abandon the Republican Party in major numbers with the right candidate, I think we’d stand a better chance rather than having the same old s*** on the menu!

What chance will the Republicans have when most of us are totally fed up with the crap that we’ve listened to for years and nothing changing (excluding President Trump)! The rest of them are just filling a seat and going along with the Democrat BS! They talk a good line when in front of the cameras, but go along with the Dems behind closed doors and to hell with their constituents! What good will the Republican Party be when 2/3 of us will not vote for another Republican candidate? I’ll vote Democrat just to remove these spineless cowards that are in office trying to say that they have our backs!!! I’m done!!!!

From the Gov:

Thanks for writing, Stephen. Obviously, our party has reached a crossroads, and it’s critically important how we decide to go forward from this point. But if I may offer some “famous last words,” I can think of none more appropriate than what you just said: “I’ll vote Democrat just to remove these spineless cowards...”

Vote Democrat? With all due respect, Stephen, I have six words for you:

Are you out of your mind?

The reason we have such a disaster in the U.S. Senate now is that Georgia Republicans, fed up by the Nov. 3 outcome, refused to vote Republican, staying home on the day of the senatorial run-off elections and giving their state two of the most radical left-wing senators ever to be on the ballot, and that’s saying something. We know now that if they had come out for the Republican candidates in numbers comparable to their November 3 turnout, they would have kept the Senate out of the hands of radical leftists. Gosh, I hope all those fed-up conservative Georgia voters are happy now.

Let’s do some basic math. Right now, the two major parties, in terms of numbers, are pretty evenly split. If the 2/3 of Republicans who, as you say, are thoroughly fed up and refuse to vote for another Republican DO vote for a third party candidate instead, that will give the third party candidate a whopping 2/3 of what the anti-Democrat vote would have been otherwise. The Republican gets the other 1/3. These two parties will split about half the total vote.

But the Democrats get almost all of the other half, which means they WIN, as all they need is a plurality. Obviously, 1/3 of the Republican vote isn’t going to get us squat. But even 2/3 of that vote isn’t going to get us squat, either. One thing about Democrats: they do stick together. And if they stick together and we fragment, with no more than 2/3 of our vote going to any one candidate, guess which party wins?

That’s right, the Democrats, every time. Go to the head of the class.

When Democrat Party candidate Bill Clinton won in 1992, he got a whopping 43 percent of the popular vote. The other two major candidates, Republican incumbent George H. W. Bush and Independent Party candidate and Texas billionaire H. Ross Perot, essentially split the rest; that “giant sucking sound” you heard was Perot sucking up 19 percent of the vote (the most a third party candidate has ever received, but it translated into ZERO electoral votes). So victory went to Clinton, the Democrat. Some analysts said that Clinton would’ve beaten Bush anyway, but we don’t know about that. A huge number of conservative Republicans rejected a second Bush term and voted for Perot, giving us the Democrats.

Let’s go farther back in history, to when former President Teddy Roosevelt tried a comeback with a third party, the Bull Moose Party. In 1912, a group of Republicans dissatisfied with President William Howard Taft formed the Bull Moose Party specifically for TR to run again. (He supposedly had said he was “fit as a bull moose” to run again.) The Bull Moose Party was “progressive” for the time and favored such new-fangled ideas as women’s suffrage, direct election of U.S. senators, and various social reforms. Roosevelt ran on what he called the “Square Deal,” based on fair business competition and more welfare programs for the needy.

Anyway, his candidacy divided the Republican Party, and Democrat Woodrow Wilson easily won. Would you like to hear about Woodrow Wilson and his administration? That’s a topic for another day, but for now let’s just say it would have been much better if TR hadn’t divided the Republican Party and let Wilson and his pals glide into the Oval Office.

Things the left would love to see from us:

1) An uprising. In fact, the Capitol breach played into their hands so well that if it hadn’t happened, they would have had to create it; make of that statement what you will. The Capitol incident gave the left all the excuse they needed to label every one of us a “domestic terrorist” and start taking our rights away. As frustrated as you might be, DO NOT give them any more reason to do that. Believe me, they are just waiting for this.

2) A third party. The left would LOVE this. Aside from the reasons mentioned above, a third party is not going to have the “ground game” of the well-oiled machine that is the Democrat Party. All this will do is split the Republican Party vote and ensure Democrat victories time after time. I know many of you don’t want to hear this, but it’s the hard truth.

3) Giving up. Some conservatives are now saying the fight is over and we have lost. Why bother voting if the elections are rigged? Why bother tweeting if you’ll just be banned? Just stay home and wait for the end. But this would be a gift to the left. When you give up, they push even harder.

We have to fix our party, from the inside. We do have a few outstanding incumbents, but for the RINOS, we have to find solid, articulate conservative candidates for primary challenges. That’s what the “progressives” in the Democrat Party did, through organizations such as Justice Democrats, the group that recruited AOC. Democrats organize like mad, and if they aren’t satisfied with their incumbents, they challenge them. This is what we’re going to have to do with our own who fail to represent our views and values. Perhaps Trump could help with this. We must go into every race with the strongest ticket we can find, work like our freedom depends on it (because it does) and be assertive poll watchers!

But, again, the worst thing conservatives can do is split off and form a third party. Don’t even think about it!

    Thank you for your ‘No third party’ column. I am another one of the many discouraged, disgusted and angry Republicans. Although I’ll be six foot under when I vote Democrat!
    I have seriously considered supporting a third party due to our spineless, weak party leaders.
    Out of respect for you and Sara.....and belief that y’all are truly a couple of the last few, true blues, I’m gonna hang in there.
    I’m an Arkansan that has voted for you every time you’ve been in the running (governor & President) Haven’t been as excited about a candidate as I am for Sara, since Trump! Thank you Governor, for your wisdom and encouragement.

    Mike, I agree wholeheartedly with your response to Stephen R. regarding forming a third party. Yes, he does sound as though he HAS lost his mind! He had all the wrong answers for all the wrong reasons!

    Do you know what it's like to write your senator and tell them where you expect them to stand and what to support and they write you back and tell you that they are going to do what they want? I have had the displeasure of being ruled by a democrat and a rino and neither could care less about what it was I wanted or needed. When will my government respect me and care about our needs? I highly doubt if there are any politicians who care about our country or our people. I am fed up with lobbyists being the ones who have the elite's hearts and minds and I am fed up with laws being written to rob me of my freedoms. I have loved and supported the Republican party since the days of Carter and I have had enough with the party of the rino.

    No one could have explained the reasoning for a non win for a 3rd party as you've stated. Being from Georgia it was devastating for our Republican voters to shy away from voting in the senate runoff for any reason. Personally, I think if Collins hadn't ran against Loeffler in the primary she would have retained her seat by receiving the majority vote. In that race, to me Collins essentially was a third party candidate. As you stated, that's a prime example of not trying to go with a 3rd party, just not going to accomplish a thing, except give the reins to the Democrats. I'm ashame to admit our voters not only let our state down, BUT let the w
    entire country enter the vortex of a flushed toilet. Please keep speaking your piece. Thank you for being you.

    Best regards, Don Jenkins

    Gov. Huckabee... What you express about a third party has always been the norm - now it is much different with a “strong patriotic” President Donald J. Trump & here is why and this is my opinion!!!
    ... In spite of all the constant attacks on Pres. Trump - he had many thousands standing outside wanting to attend his his rally’s and received 75-80 million votes in the election also & when you look at the attendance of 100 or so that Candidate Joe Biden had at his rallies - THIS SAYS IT ALL!!!
    ... The election result says that Joe Biden got more votes than any president in history - come on - GIVE ME A BREAK!!!
    ... The leadership of the newly formed “Patriot Party” as led by Former President Donald J. Trump will win in a LANDSLIDE VICTORY with no more “mail in ballots” and the use of “paper ballot” CORRECTLY COUNTED!!
    ... America is under attack with the recent “executive orders” as “signed by Joe Biden” as the president & Patriotic Citizens & AMERICA WANTS CHANGE & we are NO LONGER A NATION of SHEEP - Donald J. Trump as he leads a “Patriotic Party” will “ Make America Great Again”!!!
    ~~~~
    ... GOD BLESSES & ENABLES...
    Well said, Gov. Huckabee! Well said!
    You are absolutely correct, Governor Huckabee. I understand the frustration of Stephen R. and others agreeing with him, but they are all cutting off their noses to spite their faces. Republicans must band together and get rid of the RINOs. Support America First conservatives in primaries to do this.However, in the general election, support the Republican candidate. Even a RINO is better than a Leftist Democrat.
    But support President Trump if he decides to run again (hopefully, he will!) and excellent conservative Republicans like Matt Gaetz, Jim Jordan, Nancy Mace, Lauren Boebert, Burgess Owens, Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, Tom Cotton and yourself, Governor! There are other good ones in the House of Representatives and the Senate as well as other ones who should have been elected (Kim Klacik, Joe Collins and John James are three who come to mind.) as well as ones who will be running for office in the future (e.g, Sarah Huckabee Sanders) for federal and state offices, far too numerous to mention here. But they all deserve our support.
    I stand with you as well as with President Trump and all of the other good America First conservatives. Please keep up the good work!
    Best wishes and God Bless you!
    While it is hard to disregard you math with regard to a 3rd party impact on elections, it is equally difficult to accept that the GOP's current "leaders" will fix the party. What should the party ascribe to be? The future perfect vision of GOP. Who will lead us to that new GOP? Governor, is no one currently in a leadership position in the Congress or at the RNC who has articulated the way forward so I could feel confidant that we will be on a path to compete/beat the
    the RINO/Democrat governance and no one among them who has earned my TRUST. We need a plan we can understand, a plan we can support and most importantly, leadership we can believe.
    Governor, I get five to ten emails per day asking for me to fund Conservative, Republican candidates, Packs, the RNC, the RCC etc. I got absolutely nothing for my contributions to these individuals and groups prior to the 2020 elections. Oh, no, We got Biden and the Democrat Fascists. To whom and why should I support or give money to the same LEADERS without first being given a clear vision of the future, a plan to get there and some indication that they have earned my support.
    Regards,
    Hopeful but skeptical
    To keep things as brief as possible regarding a third party. I agree it would split the Republican Party and the Democrats would win almost if not all races in a given year. Unless President Trump is the one organizing the new party. If that were to happen, you can bet the Never Trumpers would have it running down their leg. He has the ability to get the job done and move not just 2/3 but nearly 100% to his new Patriot Party.
  • Leighanne Walker
    02/05/2021 07:24 PM
    I agree a third party would be even worse than what we have now. I have thought about not having any "Party" and the President and Congress run on merit. What would that look like? No super packs to raise the money to lift them up on a pedestal. No corporate donations allowed. A dollar limit on the amount of donations the candidates are allowed to accept so that no one person, business, or interest group can control them. And an 8-year term limit. It sounds good on paper but I'm sure that would eventually end up as a dictatorship.
    We need the Republican party to get their heads out of the sand. They know the problems with the elections, they need to be proactive in making sure that we never have another election as we did in 2020. They need to get back in their states and talk to the election boards and convince them to show ID & no mass mailing ballots. They need to talk to the people, show them that they really are there for them. There are also many ways to reach people just as you do. You may never want to run for president again but you are making a difference. You are reaching people. You are keeping us informed. I thank you for that. Congress can do the same thing if they really cared about their state and its constituents.
    I completely understand that a conservative 3rd Party would be a disaster for conservatives and pray that it won’t happen. But I fear that Mr. Trump will be lured into leading the effort and many disillusioned conservative voters would get on the doomed band wagon. I hope that you and others that he trusts will convince him that he should work hard to recruit strong candidates to renew and reform the Republican Party so that we have a good chance of winning back the House in 2022 and White House in 2024.
    Dear Governor,
    My husband and I were talking about transgender males playin on female sport teams and he had a fantastic idea:
    Instead of having girl’s/women’s or boy’s/men’s sports, why not just have xx or xy teams? Then it won’t be a matter of “identity” but biology.
    God Bless,
    02/05/2021 07:05 PM
    Basic math. If the Republican Party can only draw 1/3 of what they perceive as their own base if running against a 3rd party, the Republicans SHOULD be made extinct because they obviously are NOT representing their constituents. Which is the problem in a nutshell. They do not and will not represent their voters. They demand that THEY run the show. We're not interested in being talked down to. Constitutional Comprehension should be a required class for any candidate.
    Thank you for your detailed and very thoughtful post about No Third Party. I agree wholeheartedly and have been trying to explain this to so many people. Now I can just share a link to your article. We MUST continue with the Republican party - but we CAN change it from within with America First candidates!!
  • Sandra Jones
    02/05/2021 06:40 PM
    Thank you for your well crafted answer to why some Republicans should start a third party. It’s been shown that it has never worked and never will. There is far more that we have in common than what we have different. It’s up to us to find a platform that the vast majority of us agree on. And then be precise and concise in our support.
  • Leroy Chausse
    02/05/2021 06:25 PM
    Mike, I to am fed up with the lack of cohesive activity with the Republicans. A third party is appealing, but as you so articulately pointed out, the Dems are so in lock-step with each other that we really don't have a chance. Do our best to replace the RINO's with true Republican Conservatives. There really isn't any other option - if we last that long in this administration. And, Biden essentially said: "I'm president, only one term and I'm going to do what I want!" Translation: "I'll ruin the country in the process".
  • Clifford K Graham II
    02/05/2021 06:22 PM
    I disagree Governor. Sometimes you've just got to quit throwing good money after bad. Conservatives are taken for granted by the GOP. How hard did the GOP fight the fraud in the election? What did they do in Trump's first two years? They passed a real budget and appointed some judges. Both good things but did they shrink government? Was it a balanced budget? Did Planned Parenthood get de-funded? Did they give vouchers for parents to send kids to a school that doesn't teach Progressive theology? Were cake bakers protected from participation in religious ceremonies in which they had moral objections ? The members of the GOP who pretend to be Conservative just for fundraising aren't going to change and they are too well entrenched. You talk about ending up with Woodrow Wilson but look what we've got now! Obama didn't win because of a split ticket either. When Progressives win they move the ball. When the GOP wins they run a draw play and then punt. Conservatives might just have to take it on the chin for a couple of election cycles until the Tea party can gain enough traction. The GOP is more interested in maintaining the status quo than actually doing anything "Conservative".
  • Glen Fraser
    02/05/2021 06:19 PM
    Mike you put up a very compelling argument against a third party. Sadly weak governance and disunity within the Republicans is destroying the party. Yes. Time to have a thorough cleanse of weak leadership and the five Rhinos. If Republicans don’t act with one unified voice and action it’s game over, possibly for good. Keep up the good fight.
    Salutations governor and/or staff, I’d like to say that I have enjoyed your news letters ever since you were running for President. If recollection serves me right, you were running to reform the IRS and instigate a new tax system with a 20% flat rate (similar to Biblical Egypt did under Joseph) so I am confident that you are not a compromiser. However, while my mind says one thing; my passions desire another. I feel quite similar to many in the desire for a third party but I know that’s counterintuitive at this moment. Do we need one? I say yes. We feel like lawmakers are out of touch with their constituents and third parties are usually good ways to curb these discrepancies. Do we need one now? No, we cannot take the risk. However, that won’t stop me know from giving you, my representative, a little wishful wishlist that can be summed up simply like this: the removal of every swamp creature from our Republic. Now to break it down:
    1. Dems are impeaching Trump as a private citizen. Fight fire with fire and impeach and convict Biden. Get Tony Bolbinski and get Biden for his corruption and collusion with China.
    1.5 Use this chance to present all the election fraud evidence that was interrupted by Viking Stupidsson?
    2. Harris has said inflammatory and riotous things that spurred hatred onward.
    3. Et cetra, et cetra
    Perhaps the GOP is hesitant to fight fire with fire per se but it puts a stink in my nostrils that counter impeachments haven’t already been penned. The DNC should have been punished to the highest degree acceptable in 2016 for the established fact that they purchased the Steele dossier but all they got it seems is a little bad gossip. Every person that committed federal felonies when asking for the “unmasking” of Flynn should have been punished.
    Not should be.
    Not will be.
    Reckoning should have come ages ago.
    The Democrats shouldn’t even be in power unless we, or you let them.
    If you know they are felons, yet you only gossip among your cohorts about it; is that not being complicit in it? Accepting it? That is how I FEEL sometimes but that is not what I KNOW. I know the corruption is strong with this one but Republicans need to go on a counter attack already in the legal sense. We see talk about removing Democrats from power legally but watch as Democrats remove Republicans from power “legally”. It’s not stooping to their level if that is what they deserve for their misdeeds. Republicans have told us their serious about accountability.
    The problem with that is the stigma that follows all politicians. I think I can speak for many when I say we are sick and tired of being “told” that the Republican Party is serious. If it was, I FEEL these Dems would have been impeached or removed in 2016, 17, 18, not 19, 20, or 2021. We are tired of being told; put your money where your mouth is GOP and show us. Show us if you will make Pelosi and Biden and all these others like their spiritual ancestor Eugene V. Debs and have them running for election from a cell if it’s warranted. Until the GOP steps up my mind can’t help but entertain the doubt that they fall into the usual stigma applied to politicians one of hot air and vain promises.
    Now that I have vented somewhat, I thank you for this opportunity. It was therapeutic somewhat. Don’t get too overwhelmed and keep fighting the good fight.
    Pressure, & no pressure,
    Koltin
    sorry to burst your bubble Gov... but. 75 - 85 Million of us DID OUR PART! 75 - 85 Million of us Voted republican. WE DID OUR PART! But when the fix was in.. where was the "leadership" of the republican party STANDING GROUND and NOT giving in? When Trump was ACCUSED of inciting a riot or some bs takeover..(give me a break)..Where the hell was the republicans then. Some of these oh so sweet and special people were siding with the dems! Well we had enough! The republican party is finished as far as I'm concerned. And I dont care if YOU or your CoHorts like Romney and McConnell never are heard from again. We're SICK of THEM and WE'RE sick of Anyone that tries to defend them. And dont try to tell me that YOU KNOW BETTER/// WE can see with our own eyes the DECEIT of the republican party. Dont try to tell me how much better you are than most! Jesus is my Lord too! And one more thing. If you think all this is going to turn out so sweet and wonderful by being NICE and Kind than you better get an education. I personally leave it up to the Lord..but the rest of this Country may have learned from our history books! I bet you can be NOTHING but PASSIVE about this comment..thats what I've come to expect from republicans.
    I see where you’re coming from Governor Huckabee, but...I’m a white female 74 years of age that my husband and I have worked for everything we have and we’ve done quite well. Raised college educated kids and have never received anything free in our lives besides inheritance left to us by our hard working parents who were democrats...but they wouldn’t be if they were alive now.
    I’m sick of the Republican Party. I will never forget how they would not even support Mr. Trump when he first ran until the very end when they saw he was going to probably win. My husband and I quit giving to the Republican Party right then.
    We have no one we can trust hardly and I think the third party might just make it if they see how many people will join it. Thank you. I’m originally from Oklahoma, worked in Arkansas several years. Go Sara!!!!!! Hope you win!!!
    Thank You Governor for speaking the truth no matter how hard it is to hear.
    We CANNOT ever win with a third party, we will only help the Democratic Party stay in office by splitting the vote. What we need to do is TAKE back the Republican Party. IT IS OURS! The PEOPLES! Let’s put our time and energy into those who can run and hold our values ...we need to organize and act just like the Democratic Party did....let’s take our patriotic passion and do this!
    After having read the submission advocating a third party as an alternative to the now feckless Republican party.
    I think the British showed we can think beyond two traditional parties with a perpetual status quo. Trump was the first breath of fresh air since Regan.
    The idea that those that want something different than Socialism have to support an unimaginative, listless Republian party is unacceptable. The RNC is every bit as corrupt as the DIMMS. It lacks energy and authenticity. The only reason the DUMBOS weren't defeated in 2016 was Trump, period. Doing the same thing over and over, and expecting a different result is madness. There is nothing about Republican leadership that will bring new energy and answers in the next election. You cited the election in Georgia, there is your proof that the electorate is sick of listless and weak leadership.
    If the RNC does not reinvent itself, get in touch with today's voter, and produce, change is coming anyway. The DIMMS will win by force.
    As an aside, if the issue of fraudulent isn't fixed between now and 2022, it's all academic. The Democrats will dial up a win every election while Republicans haplessly sit on the sidelines.
    Thanks for the opportunity to contribute.
    Totally agree with you and I hear a lot of Republican voters now saying they will never vote agan, because the election was rigged. Why don't we continue to drive this issue to the ground by all Republican states setting laws to stop Stacey Abrams from ballot harvesting, filling in ballots for the poor, elderly and homeless and just having them sign the ballot, stop no-excuse absentee balloting, massive ballot drop off locations. Anyone who can walk or get around should have to vote in person and with a valid id card, even absentee ballots should require picture id. Stop the evil corruption and legal battles the democrats won in 2020, bring back paper ballots too...Why do current Republicans in House and Senate not demand this from their states.
