A Hopeful Sign

Here's a hopeful sign that maybe gas prices will take a break from their upward spiral.

https://redstate.com/bonchie/2022/03/09/is-relief-at-the-gas-pump-on-the-horizon-n533634

By the way, to all the liberals who argue that stepping up US drilling and pipeline construction wouldn’t affect gas prices because those things would take too long to show results: this is an example of how oil futures (what investors expect the price of oil to be in the future) affect prices today. Maybe they should’ve taken Investing 101 instead of Gender Studies. To help them, here's a primer on how volatility, uncertainty and fear of supply disruptions in the oil futures market affect current prices at gas pumps.

Actor Jussie Smollett is sentenced

Thursday, more than three years after faking a hate crime attack on himself that he tried to blame on white Trump supporters, and three months after being found guilty on five counts of felony disorderly conduct, actor Jussie Smollett was finally sentenced. The judge gave him 150 days in jail and 30 months of probation and ordered him to pay a $25,000 fine and $120,000 in restitution for all the police time and resources he wasted.

During pre-sentencing statements, Smollett’s attorney accused the prosecutors of 13 critical errors and constitutional violations, double jeopardy, racism and homophobia in picking jurors, and depriving Smollett of a fair trial by limiting the number of spectators in the courtroom (I’m as baffled as you are by that one.) The special prosecutor’s rep called those claims “meritless” and “riddled with distortions,” and said the only errors were committed by Smollett and his lawyers. The judge dismissed Smollett’s arguments.

https://nypost.com/2022/03/10/jussie-smollett-sentencing-underway-in-chicago/

After sentencing, Smollett dramatically shouted, “I am innocent, and I am not suicidal! If I did this, then it means that I stuck my fist in the fears of the black Americans in this country for over 400 years and the fears of the LGBTQ community. Your honor, I respect you and I respect the jury, but I did not do this. I am not suicidal, and if anything happens to me when I go in there, I did not do it to myself.”

Well, at least he’s not beating himself up over what he did.

To be fair, I do believe he is not suicidal, aside from his career decisions. I also believe he’s correct: by faking a hate crime, he did stick his fist in the fears of blacks and the LGBTQ community. He also slandered Trump supporters and contributed to the divisions and false narratives that are tearing America apart, all in an idiotic attempt to boost his career

But those are the only things he said in that entire statement that I do believe. Sorry, but it’s hard to believe he didn't lie about being beaten by two white Trump supporters when two dark-skinned Nigerian acquaintances of his confessed to conspiring with him to do it.

Since laughter is healing and brings us together, I think the best way to end this unfunny farce is with a genuinely funny headline from the Babylon Bee:

“Cruel: Jussie Smollett Will Be Forced To Share A Jail Cell With His Attacker.”

Mission Accomplished

Vice President Kamala Harris was sent on a mission to Poland. From her confusion about where she was standing to her inappropriate nervous laughter when asked about the US taking in more Ukrainian war refugees, if the mission was to help create more embarrassing Internet memes, then mission accomplished!

87,000 New IRS Auditors

Here’s something to think about when you hear Democrats say they need to pass their “Build Back Better” bill to make life better for poor and working Americans:

https://www.westernjournal.com/irs-targets-poorest-american-families-audits-5-times-rate-everyone-else/

According to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, 307,000 of the 660,000 audits the IRS conducted last year targeted people who claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit intended to give relief to the lowest earners. TRAC noted that the IRS audited those making less than $30,000 at five times the rate of higher earners. Those with incomes between $200,000 and $1 million were one-third as likely to be audited as the lowest-income earners.

“Build Back Better” includes funding to hire 87,000 more IRS agents to conduct audits.

It’s claimed that the IRS is short of the kind of well-trained agents who can do the more involved audits of rich people, and BBB would correct that and make the rich pay their “fair share.” But considering that the rich can afford the best accountants and tax attorneys, so they know how to take every legal deduction, will the IRS really find that much chicanery there?

More to the point, are you willing to risk trusting someone who says, “Hiring 87,000 more IRS auditors will work out great for you in the long run”?
