Queen Elizabeth II dies

As the whole world knows by now, Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II died Thursday at 96. Her reign of 70 years and 214 days was the longest of any female head of state and the second longest of any monarch, after France’s King Louis XIV. For most people, she has been the Queen for their entire lives, and is so associated with the word that when a movie was released a few years ago that was titled simply “The Queen,” people instantly assumed it was about her...and it was.

As an American, I’m not a fan of the concept of royalty, but if you’re going to have a monarch, you couldn’t ask for a better one than Elizabeth II. Even as a young teenager, she was already helping to inspire the British people during the darkest days of World War II. At 21, she pledged, "I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong." Despite the greatly-reduced powers of the throne, she kept that promise, devoting her life to her country and always serving her people with the utmost grace and stoic dignity, no matter how tumultuous the times or how ugly and unfair the criticisms hurled at her. She was a product of a different age and stronger values, and we’re not likely to see someone like her ever again.

Some people seemed determined to provide the world with a stark example of the opposite of the kind of grace and dignity she exemplified, as they took to Twitter to say horrible things about her and show the world their complete lack of human decency. These people crave attention and want us to know their names, which is why I refuse to name them. But I am gratified to see that one of them was so vile that even the troll-infested swamp of Twitter denounced her and that the university that pays her to inflict her seething hatreds and resentments on students actually distanced itself from her disgusting words.

I was so saddened and surprised to hear of the death of Senator Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma. He was a good friend who supported me from the earliest days of my political endeavors.

    I have a feeling that we might be seeing the beginning of the end of the Royal Show from England. The Queen was a very nice person. I send my condolences and sympathy to her family. But what does all these people cost the general public in England to keep everything going? It’s an amazing amount of money for a long gone part of government that doesn’t have anything if anything at all to do with the actual running of their country. It’s a great tourist attraction more than anything else. But it’s very very costly to keep it going. At what point do you say it’s time to move on? Just the maintenance bills alone for just one of those castles is enough to make people want it done with. I just think it is an extremely expensive thing to keep doing and I know it’s been talked about there among the people who have to pay taxes to keep those royalty people living there lifestyle. Maybe yes maybe not. But her passing is a sad thing anyway. Long Live The King.

    Would I want to live under a monarchy? No. However, from a historical point of view, I am interested in it. There won`t be another like Queen Elizabeth, though I hope I live long enough to see King William on the throne. I doubt Charles will be on the throne long.. I have actually had interaction with one of Kate`s secretaries while I worked for Belk ( I used to sell shoes that Kate was known to wear in England). The tragedy is what became of Diana and the outpouring of flowers by the British people after her death proved that. That Queen Elizabeth made the statement she did and wanted to restore her HRH title (the Spencer family said no) was almost unprecedented. I doubt any such peace will be made with Harry and Meghan after the funeral is over.

    Thank you Mike. As a Briton I’m not a fan of the concept of presidents but I greatly appreciate the eulogies given about our late Sovereign by your current and recent presidents, and yourself.

    I am 65 and have cried this week several times having not done so for ages. Our beloved Queen is gone, our national anthem has changed and singing God Save The King for the first time brought more tears. All I have known is changed.

    It’s not that my love and loyalty is not transferred to my new Sovereign, I realised I loved and would honour him as he spoke on Friday evening; but that we have lost the greatest example of a Christ-like Christian I have ever witnessed in my lifetime. All the values and characteristics she is being remembered for are those of a Spirit filled person, a disciple of Jesus.

    It is those values that have caused tributes to be poured out from ordinary folk and world leaders from every corner of the globe; from Joe Biden to Vladimir Putin and so many others.

    Thank you again for your own words.

    God save the King!
