You can always tell how destructive a piece of Democrat legislation will be by how benign a title they give it. For instance, the bill to legalize vote fraud is named the “For The People Act.” And on Tuesday, the House passed the “Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act.” Supporters claim it “helps” workers, in the same sense of Ronald Reagan’s observation that one of the biggest of all lies is “I’m from the government, and I’m here to help you.”

This is the federal version of the disastrous California Assembly Bill 5, which devastated contract, freelance and gig workers, from Uber and Lyft drivers to writers, actors and musicians. It forces every business to treat almost all workers as if they’re union employees with full benefits. Since many jobs aren’t compatible with that model (can a club afford to provide health insurance to someone who plays guitar there once a month?), those jobs are eliminated. Instead of being entrepreneurs who work how and when they want, those people end up sitting home unemployed.

The effects of this bill in California were so awful that even liberal Democrats, like suddenly unemployed freelance Internet writers, wanted it repealed. So naturally, Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats just voted to inflict it on the entire nation. Thanks, Nancy! This is one of many reasons why so many Californians signed that petition to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom. How about recalling her, too?

Worth noting: One Democrat, Texas Rep. Henry Cuellar, had the guts to vote against it, and five Republicans voted in favor of it. They are Brian Fitzpatrick (PA), John Katko (NY), Chris Smith (NJ), Jeff Van Drew (NJ), and Don Young (AK.) They’d better hope the Senate has enough sense to reject it because they may be looking for new jobs as Uber drivers themselves in a couple of years.
