Holocaust Remembrance Day

Friday was Holocaust Remembrance Day, and this article offers a recap of the many events around the world to commemorate the day and to remember the millions of victims of the Nazis.
This story is also a must-read. It’s the personal remembrances of one of the still-living survivors, 91-year-old Manny Gurowski, who as a young Jewish boy in Germany in the 1930s traded soap for bread to stay alive, spent years in a forced labor camp, and was surrounded by “mass murder all around.”

I was also glad to see that a bipartisan group of House members introduced a bill to order a study of Holocaust education in US schools, to ensure that as the victims pass away, their stories are never forgotten. With the recent rise in anti-Semitism and attacks on Jews, this is needed more than ever.

Tyre Nichols

I’m not going to try to keep up with all the developments in the story of Tyre Nichols and the protests over his death at the hands of five Memphis police officers. This is one of those 24-7 breaking stories that we can’t possibly cover in a timely fashion here, and I assume that if you’re anywhere near a TV, you’re constantly hearing the latest in real time anyway.
All I’ll do is point out some of the aspects that you might otherwise miss. Like the attempt to claim that the killing of a black man by five black police officers in a city with a black police chief and a black plurality population was motivated by racism.
Chris Queen at PJ Media has a good roundup of information and video on the various protests/riots in different cities so far. Notice the post going around in New York, headlined “Burn It All Down!” calling on the "mostly peaceful" protesters to bring “rocks, heavy objects, pipes, spray paint, kerosene, lighters and umbrellas” and to “travel in large groups, wear all black, cover your face” and “bring a knife or other tool to free unlawfully detained comrades.” Yeah, I’m sure that’s what the knives are for.
For the record: the beating of Nichols was horrifying and sickening, and the five officers are facing charges that could bring them at least 60 years in prison. I can’t imagine anyone objecting to either of those statements. So why do some people in places as far away as New York City think this justifies violence, arson and looting of local businesses that had nothing to do with it? Particularly when Nichols’ family expressly urged protesters to remain peaceful and said the last thing they wanted was violence in their son’s name.
A lot of Americans suspect that they are motivated by something other than “seeking justice.” A clue might be found in all the signs protesters carried that associated them with groups like BLM, the “Young Communists,” and the “Party of Socialism and Liberation.” If they think there is anything liberating about communism or socialism, then they have no idea what those things actually are.
Pfizer Responds
After several days of ignoring the Project Veritas Pfizer video almost as strenuously as mainstream news media outlets did, Pfizer finally issues a response/denial. You can read it here, but be prepared to have to fight your way through a thicket of medical jargon and legalese with a chainsaw.

A Closer Look at the 2022 Elections

Despite a strong challenge by Harmeet Dhillon, on Friday, Ronna McDaniel was reelected to an unprecedented fourth term as the chair of the Republican National Committee. A lot of grassroots conservatives were not happy about that. Jennifer Van Laar of Redstate.com was at the event all week and wrote an excellent report filled with onsite observations and comments, some of which reflect a disturbing disconnect between the GOP elites and the base.
She also has comments from Charlie Kirk about the problems with today’s Republican Party leadership, a response from Harmeet Dhillon, and some good insights on where we go from here and how base conservatives who are fed up with the national party leaders need to pour their energies into local elections. I think we’ve all learned recently just how important those school board and district attorney elections that most people used to ignore really are.
But while many angry Republicans blame the RNC for party losses and the fizzling of the “red wave,” and for not working to gin up maximum voter turnout or ignoring early voting, Matt Vespa at Townhall.com reports that a new analysis of the 2022 election suggests that turnout was not the GOP’s main problem.

Nate Cohn of the New York Times discovered that “in state after state, the final turnout data shows that registered Republicans turned out at a higher rate — and in some places a much higher rate — than registered Democrats, including in many of the states where Republicans were dealt some of their most embarrassing losses." The Republicans lost major races because too many of their own voters split their tickets.
For instance, the Democrats now hold the Senate because in Georgia, uber-liberal Raphael Warnock forced a run-off then defeated Herschel Walker. But the same voters in November gave Republican Gov. Brian Kemp a victory of nearly 8 points over Stacey Abrams. Republican turnout was so strong that any other Republican running besides Walker could have easily survived a loss of 2 percentage points of their vote. And the run-off didn’t have a month of early voting for the Democrats to exploit.
Even in states that were very favorable for Republicans, in some cases, voters split the ticket and voted for Democrats. Why isn’t clear. To me, it seemed obvious that virtually any Republican running would have been better than the alternative, if for no other reason than flipping Congress. Maybe they wanted “stability” (they think Biden is giving us stability?!) over “chaos and disruption,” which is how the media painted any candidates backed by Trump. Or maybe there is enough of an anti-Trump faction in the Republican vote to cost the GOP elections they could otherwise have won. Yes, the party does need to work harder on turnout, embracing early voting and, as much as I hate to say it, even ballot harvesting, if the state has made it legal and the Democrats are doing it (and they’ll be doing it, all right - Republicans can ban it after they get back in power.) But we also need to pick candidates in primaries who can win in general elections.
It’s not something most Republicans want to think about, but it needs to be considered. “Close” only counts in horseshoes, and in the long run, the GOP repeatedly losing elections by 0.5% won’t help save America any more than losing by a landslide will.
Paul Pelosi Update

The 911 call and police body cam footage of the attack on Paul Pelosi was released yesterday. While it’s still baffling, at least it might help quell some Internet rumors and it did show that NBC’s initial reporting was inaccurate.
While people were still trying to process what it was all about, the story took another weird turn when Pelosi’s alleged attacker called a TV station with this creepy message:
I think one of the commenters made a good point in asking where he was calling from. Isn’t this lunatic in custody, or if not, shouldn’t he be?
Note To School Boards: The Parents Are Your Bosses
Parents in an Iowa school district are up in arms after a school board member posted online that "the purpose of a public ed is to not teach kids what the parents want. It is to teach them what society needs them to know. The client is not the parent, but the community.”

Faced with huge backlash, the board member tried to “clarify” what that meant: “It doesn’t say that parents shouldn’t be involved or that students shouldn’t be our focus. What it says is that public education is an ecosystem. Our community is the collective for which it exists…”
Note to school boards: The parents are your bosses, and the students are your customers. Your purpose is to educate students, not indoctrinate them into whatever “ecosystem” your leftist college professors brainwashed you with. And for the record, “collective” is a term used by communists and the Borg.
Meta’s Woes

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, hasn’t been having a good year, what with layoffs, falling ad revenue and Mark Zuckerberg blowing billions on his dream of us all living in a virtual reality world he calls the Metaverse (more on that below.) So Meta has cut a $10 million deal with the Internet trash-creating site Buzzfeed to generate “content” that they hope will attract more eyeballs. For examples of what they do, check out the link. This threatens to give a whole new meaning to the term, “viral content.”
As for the Metaverse, I’m pleased to say that plans to force it on us don’t seem to be going as well as the creators of The Matrix hoped. Here’s a story about some people who were forced to work in the Metaverse and found it to be a “complete nightmare,” from the clunky headset and wonky software to the constant motion sickness.
Sounds as if it hasn’t improved since last April, when 18 volunteers spent a week working in it. Two dropped out within hours due to nausea and the rest suffered frustration, anxiety and eyestrain.
Personally, I think the best prescription for people who have to work at computers a lot is to get up from them occasionally, leave the virtual world, and go outside and spend some time in the real world. On the other hand, if Mark Zuckerberg is going to pour his fortune down a virtual rat hole, I’d rather he pour it into this than into tilting our elections to Democrats.
