We’re sad to report that Eagles founding member Randy Meisner died Thursday at 77 due to complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Meisner played bass for the band, as well as occasional songwriting and singing. His most famous vocal was the soaring lead on their classic hit, “Take It to the Limit.”

Meisner was personally shy and hated being in the spotlight and having to leave his family to tour. It led to stomach ulcers, fights with his bandmates and his quitting the group in 1977. He continued making solo records, and admitted he would have made much more money with the Eagles, but said, “I’d rather have sanity.” He also later suffered the loss of his wife from a freak gunshot accident.

Despite their past conflicts, his bandmate Don Henley remembered Meisner for his “astonishing” vocal range and as “an integral part of the Eagles and instrumental in the early success of the band.” And Don Felder called him “the sweetest man in the music business.” Rest in peace.
