Did COVID-19 escape from a Chinese lab?

This is a lengthy but important excerpt from a new book about the possible origin of the COVID-19 coronavirus by Josh Rogin.

We were all told it came from a Wuhan wet market, a story that was later quietly abandoned. Anyone who suggested it might have escaped from the nearby virus research lab was accused of spreading “disinformation.” But in a cautionary tale about letting social media techs decide what “truth” is, the “official story” on the virus’ origins is murky and keeps changing. As this book reveals, as far back as 2017, the government was concerned about the dangerous bat viruses being studied in that lab and its lack of ability to handle them safely. The author concludes that because of all the secrecy and Chinese government cover-ups, we may never know the actual origin of the virus, but escape from a lab now hardly seems to be a disproven possibility.

I do take issue, though, with his claim that by calling the disease the “China virus,” Trump was “deliberately blaming Beijing in a racist way.” No more than you’re being prejudiced against Colorado when you use the term “Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.” While we may never know precisely where the virus originated, I’d say it’s a pretty safe bet that we’ve narrowed it down to China.

Reckless Policy Leads To A Crisis

The number of women making sexual harassment claims against New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is now up to five, and fellow Democrat and State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins says enough is enough, and it’s time for Cuomo to resign.

I would’ve hoped that killing thousands of seniors in nursing homes through an insane COVID-19 policy and lying to cover it up to avoid a DOJ investigation would’ve been enough, but this just adds to the ever-growing pile of reasons why it’s long past time for Cuomo to pack up his Emmy Award and vamoose.

Still, even though Stewart-Cousins has been joined by nearly 50 other New York lawmakers in calling for Cuomo to resign or be impeached, he’s refusing to go and says they’ll have to impeach him.

In light of all this, Andrew Stiles at the Washington Free Beacon does a retrospective review of Cuomo's self-aggrandizing book about how well he handled the COVID-19 crisis (sales have “ground to a near halt,” incidentally) and why, when his deadly arrogance and incompetence were so clear to many of us at the time, the media showered him with praise and only now is turning on him. Hint: Trump was in office then and had to be vilified, but he’s not there anymore so it’s “safe” for them to tell the truth again.

Some good news out of the Supreme Court for a change

Monday, the Court ruled that Georgia Gwinnett College violated the free speech rights of former student Chike Uzuegbunam when it blocked him from sharing his Christian faith.

When he was a student in 2016, he was told that he had to stop sharing his faith unless he moved to one of two “speech zones” that made up less than 1% of the campus. Even after he did, he was twice threatened with discipline by campus police if he continued. His attorneys argued that the only permit required for free speech in America is the First Amendment, and as I keep trying to remind people, the entire country is a “free speech zone,” or should be.

In an opinion written by Clarence Thomas, the SCOTUS ruled that Uzuegbunam’s rights were violated and he can sue the school for damages. This reversed a lower court decision against him that found (stop me if you’ve heard this) that he didn’t “have standing” to sue for what they did to him because he’s no longer a student. I’m not a lawyer, but that sounds to me like saying I have no standing to sue someone who ran over me with a car because I’m no longer in the hospital.

You may be surprised to learn that the decision was 8-1, supported by Justices across the ideological spectrum. You won’t be surprised to hear that the lone holdout was Chief Justice John Roberts who (again, no surprise) argued that since Uzuegbunam was no longer a student, the case was moot. You know, like since the election is over, whether there was fraud or not is “moot.” He said, “Until now, we have said that federal courts can review the legality of policies and actions only as a necessary incident to resolving real disputes,” and “Today’s decision risks a major expansion of the judicial role.”

I’m no fan of judicial activism, but it’s beginning to seem as if Justice Roberts thinks there’s no such thing as a judicial role at all, including defending the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. If he’s going to consider all cases over disputes that happened in the past to be “moot,” that would eliminate the large majority of cases that make it to court.

"Limited freedoms"

The CDC and CNN are under fire after CNN reported that the CDC says Americans who have been vaccinated for COVID-19 can now enjoy some “limited freedoms.”

News flash: Americans enjoy virtually unlimited freedoms, including the freedom to tell CNN and the CDC where our freedoms come from and where they can put that “limited freedom” garbage. At the link are some examples of how they did just that.

Over the past year, Black Lives Matter has raked in an estimated $90 million in donations, but how much of that has gone into actually helping black communities, especially those that were devastated by rioting and looting tied to BLM protests? Eli Steele of Fox News traveled to Ferguson, Missouri, to visit with a black pastor whose community group is struggling to help people overcome the pain, vandalism and lost businesses caused by the violence following George Floyd’s death. Would you be surprised to learn that BLM hasn’t contributed one thin dime to helping his organization or several others?
