There’s a rule on the Internet called “Godwin’s Law” that states that the longer an argument goes on on the Internet, the more likely it is that one side will compare the other to Hitler. There’s a corollary to that the person who does that first is the loser of the argument because if you can’t come up with something better than calling someone you disagree with “Hitler,” then you have no valid argument.
I think we can now safely say that Democrats have no valid argument for not electing Donald Trump, since one of the left’s most venerable media outlets, the New Republic magazine, just put Trump on its cover with a Hitler mustache and the headline, “American Fascism: What it would look like.”
Well, since they brought it up, and they obviously were out smoking dope when they should’ve been in history class, I’ll tell them what it would look like.
Since the Nazis were national socialists, it would involve a crackdown on individual rights and a vast expansion of state power, reaching into the private sector, education and the media. Freedom of speech would be severely curtailed and any criticism of the reigning regime would be censored as "disinformation." The leader would stand in front of some patriotic but warped backdrop (say, something blood red), waving his arms and angrily denouncing anyone who questions his leadership as a threat to the nation. He would abuse the powers of government to oppress his political opponents, prosecuting them on made-up crimes that nobody else was ever charged with, convicting them in kangaroo courts and sending them to prison for stretches far longer than those given to actual criminals.

His supporters would march through the streets, trying to terrorize citizens into silence so they wouldn’t speak up against the leader. There would be a lot of fires, assaults and broken glass to let us know they mean business. If it were a good old-fashioned German/Hitler-like fascism, there would also be a lot of assaults on Jews and synagogues and calls for the eradication of Israel. Some of his more strident followers would even call for assassinating his political opponent, in the name of “protecting democracy,” of course.
If any judges dared to stand up against the regime and protect the law and the Constitution, the Leader would publicly denounce them as a threat to the republic, and his goon squads would call for eliminating the courts, while some might even go to the judges’ homes to threaten them and their families, which his “law enforcement” forces would do nothing to stop.
And of course, there would be regime media outlets that dutifully repeated whatever lies the ministers of propaganda handed out to them. Looking at you, New Republic.
Strangely enough, none of this reminds me of Trump, who reduced the power of government, refused to prosecute his political opponents, did not crack down on free speech or the media, was the best friend Israel ever had in the White House, and whose daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren are Jewish.
It does sound disturbingly familiar, though…
