A Supreme Court Nominee

Today, President Biden announced that he will nominate DC Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Ketanji Brown to replace Stephen Breyer on the Supreme Court.

https://townhall.com/tipsheet/katiepavlich/2022/02/25/breaking-scotus-n2603792

With the 51-year-old Brown, Biden is keeping his promise to nominate a black woman, but he picked one of the most controversial candidates possible. With a 50-50 Senate, he’ll need every confirmation vote he can get. Michelle Childs of South Carolina was seen as having much more bipartisan support. She could have drawn the votes of Republican Lindsay Graham and moderate Democrat Joe Manchin.

But as that linked article reports, Brown is under fire as a leftwing activist who will ignore the law and the Constitution to legislate from the bench. Biden was reportedly under pressure from Arabella Advisers, a DC liberal consulting firm and dark money group founded by former Clinton administration appointee Eric Kessler, to appoint Brown because she'd be more likely to rubber stamp the left’s agenda.

If you think this sounds like precisely the kind of naked partisanship that Biden told voters he would end, you’re right, and it’s become the rule rather than the exception. Maybe he hopes that a contentious failed nomination fight will fire up the leftist base before the election. But if so, that means that putting a qualified black female judge on the SCOTUS that a majority of Americans could support is an idea that’s taken a back seat to playing politics.

Challenge Dismissed

A federal judge has dismissed a challenge to the latest Republican state redistricting plan in Arkansas.

https://redstate.com/streiff/2022/02/23/arkansas-redistricting-map-challenge-is-dismissed-by-a-federal-judge-n526902

While this is a state-level issue, the article is worth reading to see why the judge threw out the case. A judge finally recognized that there’s no provision in the law for a tactic that those on the left commonly use to thwart the legislature’s right to draw district lines. As the writer explains, if the Supreme Court is in agreement with this judge’s ruling, it could signal a long-overdue blow to activist judges trying to meddle in elections by redrawing district lines from the bench.

Bob Saget Update; RIP Gary Brooker by Pat Reeder

According to People magazine, investigators now believe that the reason "Full House" star Bob Saget suffered so much head trauma is that he likely slipped or fell unconscious in his hotel bathroom and hit his head on the marble floor. They think he regained consciousness enough to stumble to bed, fell unconscious again and died of a brain bleed.

https://nypost.com/2022/02/24/police-believe-bob-saget-hit-head-on-bathroom-floor-report/

While it’s being described as an “unusual case,” it sounds oddly familiar to me. I can’t put my finger on it at the moment, but somewhere in my book- and record-stuffed house, I have Who singer Roger Daltrey’s memoir, “Thanks a Lot, Mr. Kibblewhite: My Story.” Daltrey has suffered four concussions in his life. I seem to recall him writing that one thing he misses about being in a young, struggling band is staying in cheap motels that don’t have “spa” bathrooms with smooth marble floors that become slippery death traps when they get wet.

Laura and I are big HGTV viewers, and among the many current design trends we hate (“open” floor plans, everything gray and white, etc.) is giant hotel spa-like bathrooms with marble floors. Now we’re wondering if one of them might have killed Bob Saget.

I’m sad to report that Gary Brooker, best known as the singer/keyboardist and songwriter of the British prog rock band Procol Harum, died at his home Saturday after a battle with cancer. He was 76.

https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/gary-brooker-frontman-procol-harum-dead

While the band was known primarily for their 1967 mega-hit, “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” they released 13 albums, many quite good. Brooker also cut four solo albums and worked with such superstars as Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Kate Bush and Bill Wyman.

If you have to be famous for one hit, theirs was the one. It’s sold over 10 million copies worldwide, been covered by at least 1,000 artists and appeared in countless movies and TV shows. It’s in both the Grammy and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame, and was named the most-played song on British broadcasting of the past 70 years and the song most played in public places in the UK over the past 75 years. In 1977, it tied at the Brit Awards with Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” for Best British Pop Single of 1952-1977 (and that includes the entire Beatles catalog.)

Trivia: Sorry, the title is not a reference to white supremacy. It came from lyricist Keith Reid overhearing a girl at a party tell someone that they’d just “turned a whiter shade of pale.” Despite the psychedelic imagery, he said it’s a straightforward girl-leaves-boy story inspired by books, not drugs.

While we’re at it: it’s rumored that the band’s name is Latin for “Beyond these things,” but according to Reid, it was just named after a friend’s Siamese cat.

More dangerous misinformation

Whose fault is it that Russia invaded Ukraine? If you guessed that it’s the fault of the only President in the past 13 years during whose term Russia DIDN’T invade anyone, then you just might have a terminal case of Trump Derangement Syndrome.

DGA News

The Democratic Governors Association is holding a meeting in Palm Beach, Florida. Wow, even Democrat Governors are fleeing blue states for Florida!

2nd Amendment News from Ukraine

The far-left group Occupy Democrats has come out strongly in support of armed Ukrainians using personal weapons, including automatic rifles (I’m guessing they mean semis) to stand up against the Russian invaders.

https://twitchy.com/dougp-3137/2022/02/25/occupy-democrats-are-big-supporters-of-a-heavily-armed-citizenry-in-ukraine/

So if you’re keeping score, to leftwing Democrats, the Second Amendment is good – but only in Ukraine.

And an armed citizenry is the best defense against tyranny and invasion. But only in Ukraine.

How to Help Ukraine

If you would like to help the men, women and children of Ukraine who have been forced to flee their homes to escape the Russian attack, Fox News has information on three vetted charities that are rushing aid to the refugees:

https://www.foxnews.com/lifestyle/how-help-people-ukraine

Prof. Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit also has a suggestion sent along by a friend: the US should offer to take in up to a million Ukrainian refugees. He says that since Eastern Europeans vote overwhelmingly rightwing, it would be interesting to see the Democrats suddenly turn on a dime and argue that America just can’t accept any more immigrants and refugees.

Gov. Huckabee, can you get Dolly Parton on your Huckabee TV show? If you do, please show the clip at this link, where she wrote and sang a song for Johnnie Carson.

"So if you’re keeping score, to leftwing Democrats, the Second Amendment is good – but only in Ukraine. And an armed citizenry is the best defense against tyranny and invasion. But only in Ukraine."

That would be because there isn't a shade of light existent between leftwing Democrats and thuggish Communists.

I would be delighted to see another woman of whatever color on SCOTUS. The flavor doesn’t bother me at all because I look at the brains, legal knowledge and sound Constitutionally based decisions. This Constitution has served us well for a lot of years. Yes, from time to time we do need changes. There is a mechanism for that. It’s called an Amendment. Yes, they are hard to get passed, for good reason. We don’t need Presidents and a Court to perform legislative duties, the thing is the lefties won’t really know anything about this nominee’s record as it will be well hidden in the media. The ones I know would rather dine on strychnine medium rare, with a side of arsenic, than watch Fox. Once again the Pres. did what he was told. Such a good little soldier.

If Democrats truly feel we cannot accept any more immigrants and refugees, then they will no justification for refusing to close our Southern Border. Let's give Putin Kamala Harris in exchange for all the Ukrainians who want to come to the United States.

Prayers for the people of Ukraine.
