Today's Commentary:  What the Sessions hearing was really about -- A Brewing Immigration Story Out Of Michigan -- Lawsuit Abuse

If anyone had any doubt of what Democrats hope to achieve by drawing out the “Russia” investigation, it should be crystal clear after Jeff Sessions’ testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee. The knives are out for the Head of State, just as obviously as they are in that bloody Central Park production of JULIUS CAESAR. They couldn’t defeat him at the ballot box, so this is their consolation prize: the chance to try to take him down in whatever way they can.

Though Sessions had little to add about timelines and meetings that wasn’t already known –- he repeatedly made the point that after having been recused, he no longer is briefed –- the Democrats on the committee weren’t interested in that so much as in his private conversations with President Trump. Sessions insisted that according to DOJ policy, such conversations are considered confidential, but the Democrats on the committee were having none of it. They pushed and cajoled with all their might to get him to say those two little words, “executive privilege.” Since the President himself is not under investigation for collusion with Russia, this effort obviously wasn’t about that investigation at all, but about finding some reason, however tenuous, to go after HIM. Just think of all the fun they could have, calling in official after official to testify under oath about their private conversations with the President! Why, it could go on for, oh, at least four interminable years.

As Sessions reminded them during the hearing, some people have offices to run.

Jeff Sessions is a slow-talking Southern gentleman, and it made the blood boil to see The Inquisition attack him like a machine gun, interrupting his answers constantly. At one point, Sessions had to insist on qualifying an answer that was coming too slowly to satisfy the questioner, noting that if he didn’t qualify it, he’d later be accused of lying. We all know that is exactly what would happen.

But Sessions was there to set his own record straight, and he stated that any suggestion he participated in or was aware of any collusion with the Russians was “an appalling and detestable lie.” And though he didn’t say it (I will), the obvious motives of certain questioners on the panel were just as appalling and detestable.

Sincerely,

Mike Huckabee

A Brewing Immigration Story Out Of Michigan

By Mike Huckabee

There was a recent mass round-up of dozens of illegal immigrants in Michigan that might have the Trump Administration taking a second look at its policy. The subjects facing deportation are Iraqi Christians. ICE says they’ve all been convicted of crimes, some serious. But their families say they’ve long since paid their debts for the crimes, and if they’re sent back to Iraq, where 80% of the Christian population has already fled for their lives, they’ll have no protections and it would be like sending cattle to the slaughter.

If Trump makes an exception for these Christians, then liberals will likely accuse him of favoring Christians over Muslims (they don’t seem to care much for “nuance” when it comes to tarring his immigration policies with accusations of religious prejudice). But America’s immigration and deportation laws have long allowed for the favoring of one group over another if the people would face death upon being returned to their native countries, and Iraqi Christians have been designated as victims of genocide. It’s a complicated and potentially tragic situation. If the Trump Administration doesn’t address it, then there’s already a federal lawsuit being planned to stay the deportations, so this won’t be the last you’ll hear of it

Lawsuit Abuse

By Mike Huckabee

A watchdog group called Citizens for Responsible Ethics in Washington (CREW) and the attorneys general of DC and Maryland have all filed lawsuits against President Trump, accusing him of violating the emoluments clause of the Constitution by taking gifts from foreign governments.  This is based on the notion that he benefits from foreign profits to his business, even though he legally separated himself from his business when he took office.

The Justice Department has responded that the lawsuits are absurd, but they’re just the latest attempt to try to distract and hamstring Trump from enacting the agenda he was elected to implement through the abuse of the courts via friendly liberal judges.  Blind trusts were created so that private citizens could serve in office without having to divest themselves of businesses they’d built a lifetime building.  Without that protection, the only people who would be allowed to hold office would be those who’d never earned a penny in their lives that didn’t come from a government paycheck.  And as the DOJ pointed out, imposing such a rigorous standard would have eliminated many Presidents going all the way back to Washington and Jefferson, whose plantations continued growing crops that were sold overseas even while they were in office.

Maybe the problem is that liberals just can’t grasp the difference between running a business that generates an honest profit and influence peddling since so many on the left in recent years have made influence peddling their most profitable sideline business.

Thank you for your fine newsletter Mike. It is a real pleasure to read something these days that actually makes sense, something that doesn't blame our President for all the troubles in this country. When will the Democrats get over losing the election. I have never seen anything like this. Hillary lost because she was a lousy candidate - plain and simple. I hope she runs again in 2020. That will assure Donald Trump of 4 more years in the White House. Then perhaps she will finally get the message that America doesn't want her in the White House. What do you think?
