BIBLE VERSE OF THE DAY
Two Very Different Nominations
By Mike Huckabee
Thursday, the Senate confirmed former California Attorney General Xavier Becerra as Health and Human Services Secretary by a 50-49 vote with Maine Sen. Susan Collins as the only Republican supporting him.
Republicans had two basic objections to Becerra:
1. He’s a rabid leftwing partisan with zero respect for freedom of conscience, mostly known for abusing his office to prosecute critics of Planned Parenthood, and…
2. We’re dealing with a pandemic and he has zero experience with anything remotely connected to health and human services.
In short, he’s a pretty typical example of a divisive, partisan, unqualified Biden Cabinet pick. On the other hand, when he actually chooses someone worthwhile, that person can attract bipartisan support. Thursday, the Senate voted unanimously (98-0) to confirm Katherine Tai as US trade envoy.
Tai is the first Asian-American and first woman of color to hold that position, just as Becerra is the first Latino to hold his new position. The difference is that Tai has qualifications beyond box-checking. She has years of experience in trade negotiations and is considered to be a problem-solving pragmatist, and she said she would work for a trade policy that benefits workers, not just big corporations, and work with our allies to confront Chinese aggression. Let's hope that turns out to be true.
Police Reform
By Mike Huckabee
I could probably fill this newsletter with examples of terrible California bills that are largely responsible for people fleeing the state, yet that Democrats want to take nationwide. Here’s another one that’s coming up for consideration and is so horrific, it will probably pass and then be forced on all America by Nancy Pelosi. It’s a “police reform bill” called California Assembly Bill 655.
It would require police departments to investigate any potential new hires to determine if they had ever “engaged in membership in a hate group, participation in hate group activities, or public expressions of hate.” So, what’s wrong with that? We all hate hate, right?
The problem is the SPLC, the Southern Poverty Law Center, which I call America’s most lucrative hate group. Once a legitimate civil rights group, the SPLC devolved into a corrupt, partisan enterprise that scares liberals into sending them money by claiming to find new hate groups around every corner. Since there simply aren’t enough real hate groups to satisfy their greed, they started branding mainstream conservative and Christian organizations as “anti-gay hate groups” if they believe in the Biblical definition of marriage or oppose the radical transgender agenda.
It was an unbalanced SPLC follower who, influenced by their false claims, burst into the headquarters of the Family Research Council, firing a gun.
Any responsible organization would have done some soul-searching at that point and changed its ways, but the SPLC doubled down. And major government and private organizations have the SPLC their go-to authority on “hate group” designations, even though they directly inspired an extremist to launch an armed assault in Washington, DC, which I thought Democrats believed was a bad thing now.
The upshot is that if California passes AB 655, police departments will likely use the SPLC to determine “hate groups,” which will mean virtually any mainstream Christian or traditional values conservative will be blocked from becoming a police officer. It might even apply to any member of a pro-life group, since the SPLC might tar them as “hate groups” for wanting to deny women their constitutional right to kill their babies.
Back when the First Amendment still applied, this was known as “religious discrimination in hiring.” Just one of the many awful things, from socialism to segregation to judging people by their skin color, that today’s so-called “progressives” are unearthing from the last century and trying to revive.
Best Political Theater of the Week
By Mike Huckabee
Watching Sen. Rand Paul, himself a medical doctor, grill Dr. Fauci on his claims that even after everyone is vaccinated, they’ll still have to wear a mask (or two) for another year or more.
While the back and forth was fun (Paul: “You’ve been vaccinated and you parade around in two masks for show”), Paul had a very strong point: if we’re trying to overcome people’s resistance to getting the vaccine, it’s counterproductive to take away the incentive for it by telling them that even if they do, nothing will change and they’ll still have to follow draconian pandemic rules for another two or three years.
Prof. Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit has quite a round-up of data from around the world to back up the claim that lack of trust in officials like Dr. Fauci is behind the resistance to get vaccinated, even among frontline health care workers.
And on the subject of masks, a new study comparing Florida schools that did and didn’t mandate facemasks found virtually identical infection rates, with a sharper drop in cases in schools that didn’t require masks.
Pelosi Is Pushing A Radical Left Agenda
By Mike Huckabee
Speaker Nancy Pelosi continues to use her bare Democrat majority in the House to push a radical left agenda, with the House on Thursday passing the benignly-named (as all these bills are) “Farm Workforce and Modernization Act” and “American Dream and Promise Act.” Those rainbows ‘n’ daisies names cover for bills that actually create a pathway to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants, and not just the small number of “Dreamers” who were illegally brought to the US by their parents as children.
The first bill passed 247-174 with 30 Republicans in favor and one Democrat against. The second passed 228-197 with nine Republicans joining all Democrats voting in favor.
The majority of Republicans who opposed the bills argued that this was rewarding people for breaking US immigration laws while those who obeyed the laws are stuck in the back of the line. It’s also sending a signal to the world that we reward illegal immigrants at a time when we’re already facing a massive surge and a humanitarian and security crisis on the border because of the Biden Administration revoking all of Trump’s successful border security measures.
House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy pointed out that Pelosi held a press conference to tout the bills with a sign reading, “Home is Here,” which he called the “wrong message at the wrong time.” Texas Gov. Greg Abbott warned that that message is already out.
Since the bills would have to overcome the 60-vote threshold to avoid a filibuster, they’re likely doomed in the Senate (provided the filibuster – and the squishy Republicans – hold). But even knowing that, the House passed them anyway, which leads me to assume Pelosi knew that the only thing they would really accomplish is to encourage an even bigger surge and crisis on the border. That and playing up to illegal immigrants, but why would Democrats care about that? They don’t vote, right?
Special Podcast Episode

Special guests Callie and Cameron Kimball (and their attorney) join this bonus addition of "The People's Podcast with Mike Huckabee" to discuss their "outrageous" experience of getting kicked off a Spirit Airlines flight because their four-year-old son, who has autism, was not wearing a mask (despite having a medical note explaining why he's unable to wear one).
