The children of animal expert and beloved TV personality “Jungle” Jack Hanna announced that he has been diagnosed with dementia, now believed to be Alzheimer’s disease. It has progressed so quickly that he can no longer participate in public life. For many years, Hanna has been affiliated with the Columbus Zoo and delighted generations of TV audiences with his own series such as “Animal Adventures” and “Into The Wild” and his many appearances with various animals on talk shows such as those of David Letterman and Jimmy Fallon.

His family asked for privacy, noting the irony since he loves interacting with people. They assured fans that while his health has deteriorated quickly, “his great sense of humor continues to shine through. And yes – he still wears his khakis at home.”

I think I speak for all of us when I express gratitude for the many years of entertainment Jack Hanna has given us, and for all the work he’s done to promote conservation and to educate the public about animals. And I’m sure you’ll join me in sending prayers and good wishes to him and his family at this difficult time. That includes Suzi, his wife of 53 years, who is currently recovering from major surgery. His family’s full statement is at this link.

Also, AARP magazine recently revealed that music legend Tony Bennett is battling Alzheimer’s. That full story is at this link, and I hope you’ll remember him and his family in your prayers as well.
