After failing last week by 216-214 to impeach DHS Secretary-in-Name-Only Alejandro Mayorkas, House Republicans managed last night to pass the resolution by a razor thin 214-213 (it helped that Rep. Steve Scalise was back after being absent last week.) This makes Mayorkas the first Cabinet official to be impeached by the House since Ulysses S. Grant’s Secretary of War William Belknap in 1876.

Removing him would require a two-thirds vote in the Democrat majority Senate, which is never going to happen. But at least there will now be a trial where the public can hear (and I hope, the media will be forced to report) the many reasons why Mayorkas richly deserves to be impeached. 

And when the Democrats vote to exonerate him, it will sadly be official: no Democrat will ever be removed from office, no matter what they do, as long as Democrats hold more than one-third of the Senate. If someone can’t be impeached for repeatedly lying to Congress, willfully refusing to do his constitutional duty, and allowing a massive foreign invasion of America while he’s supposed to be in charge of our homeland security, then what can anyone ever be impeached for?

Well, other than making a phone call when your name is “Trump?”
