In another closely-watched religious freedom case, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously in favor of a Pennsylvania postal worker who was being required to deliver Amazon packages on Sunday in violation of his observance of the Sabbath.

This overturns a 1977 ruling that employers had to "reasonably accommodate" an employee's religious beliefs and practices, as long as it didn’t create an "undue hardship" on the business. People of faith have long complained that employers take advantage of the vagueness of the term “undue hardship” to force them to violate their beliefs, and it can be used as an excuse not to hire applicants with religious beliefs.

The SCOTUS found that it takes more than a minimal cost or inconvenience to establish “undue hardship” and sent the case back to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals for further proceedings consistent with these new stricter standards.
