A Coronation
I hope you had a safe and fun Cinco de Mayo celebration. It was hard to get today’s newsletter done, between that and rushing home from King Charles’ III’s Coronation!
Okay, I didn’t actually do either of those things. But I did watch some of the pomp and circumstance on TV. It’s the first coronation in 70 years, so the Britons wanted to do it up big. It was an impressive spectacle, although I admit that when I saw Prince Charles, who's mostly known for spreading fear about the climate, in the crown and royal robes, surrounded by golden carriages and horses all fancied up, I couldn’t help thinking of Burt Lahr in “The Wizard of Oz” singing, “If I Were King of the Forest.”

Walensky resigns
Friday, Dr. Rochelle Walensky announced her resignation as the head of the CDC, a job she’s held since Biden’s first day in office.

She gave no reason, but it came as both the US government and the World Health Organization declared the COVID pandemic officially over.

The White House heaped praise on Walensky, saying she had saved lives by leading “a complex organization on the frontlines of a once-in-a-generation pandemic with honesty and integrity. She marshalled our finest scientists and public health experts to turn the tide on the urgent crises we’ve faced.” Walensky herself said the CDC had overseen the administration of more than 670 million vaccine doses and “protected the country and the world from the greatest infectious disease threat we have seen in over 100 years.”
However, as you can see at the link, not everyone heaped praise on her. Rep. Ronny Jackson, the former White House doctor, tweeted “GOOD RIDDANCE” and accused her of spreading “some of the WORST misinformation” about COVID and the vaccine, and letting radical teachers’ unions dictate school closure policies. Others slammed her for pushing vaccine mandates for pregnant women and people at little risk despite potential side effects.
I might also add this to the criticism: being an ingrate. Whether you think the vaccines were a miracle or a curse is beside the point. We know Walensky thinks they were a miracle, and she took credit for overseeing over 670 million doses. But, like Biden, she never mentions that the vaccines and the program distributing them were both developed under the Trump Administration. Granted, a lot of Trump supporters would rather not bring that up, either. But you can’t claim everything about Trump was evil and then take bows for something he did that you just inherited.
Kari Lake Update
Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake scored two big victories and a small loss in the state Supreme Court this week. The Court ordered a lower court to hold a hearing into her claim that Maricopa County failed to follow the law for verifying signatures on mail-in ballots. They’ll now have to check 300,000 mail ballots for missing or mismatched signatures in a race determined by only 15,000 votes. The Court also rejected a request by the groups Lake is suing to make her pay their legal fees.

The loss is that Lake’s attorneys were fined $2,000 for saying in court that it’s an “undisputed fact” that 35,563 ballots were added to the vote total, when some people do dispute it. Strangely enough, that piddly setback was virtually the only thing about this Court ruling that major liberal media outlets covered. Once again proving that their definition of “misinformation” is “information we’d prefer our readers miss.”

The HHS caves
Well, that was blessedly quick! I was going to write today about the Department of Health and Human Services' outrageous threat to pull the accreditation of a Catholic hospital in Tulsa unless it extinguished the eternal flame candle in its chapel. The HHS had branded that iconic symbol of the faith a “fire hazard,” despite the fact that it was a small candle contained inside double glass with a metal cover, had never been considered a problem by local fire authorities, and had burned for over 60 years with no incidents.
I said I was going to write about that, but before I could get to my keyboard on Saturday, the HHS had already caved. All it took was a “pre-litigation” letter from the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, which read:
““If we go to court, you will lose. I write in the hope that you will see reason (or at least the law) and we can skip to the easy part.” Both the hospital’s accreditation and its eternal candle will remain. And God has sent us a lesson that standing up to those who target religious freedom works.
Latest News from the Two-Tiered Justice System
In a week in which some Proud Boys are facing long prison terms after being convicted of the lofty charge of seditious conspiracy over January 6th (including one who wasn’t even in DC at the time), “justice” was also meted out to the offspring of powerful Massachusetts Democrat Rep. Katherine Clark. Clark’s 23-year-old “non-binary daughter” (aka, her son, Jared 'Riley' Dowell) was arrested during an anti-cop protest in Boston for spray-painting anti-police slogans on a concrete bandstand and resisting arrest and hitting an officer in the face.
The maximum punishment for Dowell’s list of charges is a $5,000 fine and 2-1/2 years in prison. But under a plea deal, Dowell was let off with 30 hours of community service and has to write an apology letter to the cop who was assaulted. If Dowell completes all the requirements (a heavy burden indeed!), the case will be dropped completely after a year. Seeing as the cop was bleeding from the mouth and nose, I hope that apology letter will have pain killing properties.
At the time of the arrest, Rep. Clark tweeted a statement reading, "I love Riley, and this is a very difficult time in the cycle of joy and pain in parenting. This will be evaluated by the legal system, and I am confident in that process. I condemn violence against everyone, whether that is against police or against community members as a result of any person or government entity."
The good news for her and her family is that if you’re from the right political party and have connections, it appears that even if your kid does commit violence against police, you can be confident in the legal process doing virtually nothing.
UPDATE on the death of Jordan Neely
UPDATE on the death of Jordan Neely, the mentally-disturbed homeless black man who died while being subdued with a chokehold by a white Marine veteran after he made threatening comments to subway riders. He had dozens of prior arrests, including four for assault, and had obvious mental problems, yet the Democrat-run legal system just kept putting him right back on the street. Naturally, Democrats like Reps. AOC and Ayanna Pressley placed no responsibility for his fate on their own policies, instead declaring his death to be murder and a “lynching,” and helping to incite racial divisions, protests and potential riots. I also reported that the coroner had ruled the death a “homicide,” even though the Marine said he had no intention of killing Neely and was just trying to subdue him.
And now, here’s the latest: New York City prosecutors, who couldn’t be bothered to keep Neely safely in jail, are reportedly building a case and are likely to send it to a grand jury next week. We’ll see if they return charges against the Marine and what they are. Anyone want to hazard a guess?
Biden meets the press
Friday, President Biden sent White House reporters scrambling by saying he had a major press conference scheduled for that afternoon.
He actually had an interview with MSNBC, which could in no way be compared to a press conference where actual reporters ask tough questions.
To be fair, if MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle had given tough follow-up questions after some of Biden’s statements, it might have come across as elder abuse. For instance, when he was asked about his low poll numbers (this was MSBNC, so the question was, “You're talking about real, practical solutions…Why do you think you don't get more credit for it?”), he claimed it’s because he gets nothing but negative press coverage. I’m sure Donald Trump’s jaw hit the floor when he heard Biden carp about the press being too mean to him. The very question he was answering was a media tongue bath. Maybe he could get 51 former intelligence officers to write a letter claiming that all negative press coverage is Russian disinformation. I’m sure most of the media would run with it.
Oh, but that was just a warm-up! When asked why he deserved to be reelected, he replied (you might want to sit down for this):
“Because I have acquired a hell of a lot of wisdom. And I know more than the vast majority of people. I'm more experienced than anybody has ever run for the office and I think I've proven myself to be honorable as well as also effective."
Okay, has your head stopped reeling yet? Then try this. When asked about how the possible indictment of his son Hunter might impact his presidency, he replied:
"First of all, my son's done nothing wrong. I trust him, I have faith in him, and it impacts my presidency by making me feel proud of him."
I think that like a grandfather who’s about to drive his station wagon through a 7-11 window, he just doesn’t see the impact coming.
PS – There was one thing Biden said that made sense. I assume he was trying to slam Trump and had a brain glitch, saying, “We can’t let Obama” be President again. For once, I agree completely with Joe Biden.
Large Majorities agree with Republicans
The election software company Konnech withdrew its defamation lawsuit against True the Vote, its founder Catherine Engelbrecht and contractor Gregg Phillips, whose arrest, strip-search and jailing in solitary confinement struck me as a judicial outrage right out of a Third World dictatorship.
But this might not be over. Engelbrecht said Konnech’s aggressive lawsuit was designed to shut down all conversation about its activities and resulted in her and Phillips’ wrongful imprisonment. True the Vote issued a statement calling the lawsuit "meritless and intended to harass," adding, "They have failed. We are evaluating our options with regard to holding them accountable for their unwarranted actions. We believe Konnech dismissed its lawsuit because it saw that it would lose." Stay tuned...
Paul Stanley caves
UPDATE: It took only a day or two for KISS singer Paul Stanley to cave to the trans mob and back off his completely reasonable comments about not approving of letting confused and immature kids radically and permanently alter their bodies.

And from our “Oh, the humanity!” file: former MMA champ Jake Shields is tired of hearing that men have no physical advantage over women in sports. So he’s issued a challenge: he'll fight the 10 toughest female-to-male “trans” people in the world, one after the other without a break. Shields said he doesn’t want to smash women, but it’s the only way to prove how ridiculous this is, and “when they see them all dropped in seconds, they won’t be able to defend trans women in women’s sports.”
Or we could avoid all the bloodshed by just making them watch “Lia” Thomas with their eyes open.
In case you missed it: DC jury convicts Proud Boys of “seditious conspiracy”
I’ve been clear from the outset that the events of January 6 should make no one proud. But a subsequent trial and verdict sure won’t make you proud of our ‘justice’ system.
After a nearly four-month trial, four of five Proud Boys were found guilty of seditious conspiracy related to January 6 in a Washington DC court on Thursday. For more detail, we went to the definitive source on this story, Julie Kelly at AMERICAN GREATNESS.
Enrique Tarrio, Ethan Nordean, Joseph Biggs, and Zachary Rehl were all convicted of seditious conspiracy and conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding. Dominic Pezzola was found guilty of conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, and they were all convicted of conspiracy to prevent an officer from discharging any duties, obstruction of law enforcement during a civil disorder, and one count of destruction of government property.
For taking a police riot shield during the chaos, Pezzola was also found guilty of assaulting or impeding law enforcement and also of robbery.
Some charges are still unresolved, and Kelly says it’s “unclear” how Judge Tim Kelly (no relation) will instruct the jury on handling those.
We’ve covered this mess of a trial on and off as it started and stopped, especially the last-minute revelation of numerous FBI informants within the group. Kelly’s report has links to the various controversies that came up during court.
“Seditious conspiracy” is a statute that originated after the Civil War to deal with those who rebelled against the United States. Until 2022, no one had ever been convicted of it. But the language is vague enough to facilitate the criminal prosecution of public dissent. Both seditious conspiracy and obstruction of an official proceeding are felonies punishable by up to 20 years in prison --- each.
These individuals were essentially found guilty by reason of inflammatory group chats. They brought no arms to the event, they assaulted no officer, and group leader Tarrio wasn’t even in Washington on January 6. He was in a Baltimore hotel.
Though Judge Kelly was a former Trump appointee, Julie had the impression he was “acting as a second lawyer for the prosecution, routinely rubber-stamping government motions that make the convictions ripe for appeal.” And there had better be one.
One important reason for appeal is the make-up of this jury. Of course, in DC it’s virtually impossible to get an impartial group of 12, but this particular jury appears to have been dripping with bias. According to LAWFARE writer Roger Parloff, “Six jurors had participated in liberal-leaning protests or marches, while none mentioned conservative-leaning demonstrations. The protests included, in two cases, ‘women’s’ marches; in two cases, ‘anti-gun’ marches; and, in four cases, protests related to Black Lives Matter or George Floyd’s murder, which, as we’ll see, are of particular concern in this case. One sitting juror had a Black Lives Matter sign in her yard.”
As if that weren’t bad enough, at the time of jury selection, the J6 Kangaroo Kourt was holding its televised hearings, even singling out the Proud Boys, but Judge Kelly was not persuaded that the hearings would influence an already-partisan jury pool
Julie Kelly notes that prosecutors often mentioned President Trump during the trial, and believes that “the convictions will bolster Special Counsel Jack Smith’s ongoing investigation into Donald Trump for similar charges.” (He’s also in charge of looking into Trump’s alleged possession of classified documents at Mar-A-Lago.) If you doubt that this is the endgame, here’s what attorney Andrew Weissmann (who ran the Mueller investigation of Trump) tweeted after the verdict: “[Huge] win for the government and our democracy --- terrorist group, unleashed by the former President, held to account. Makes charging the leader of the seditious conspiracy, one Donald J. Trump, imperative.”
This is surely the ace up their sleeve if Trump maintains his level of support leading into the ‘24 election. They don’t seem to understand that their misuse of the legal system to target Trump is backfiring --- convincing many conservatives that we need HIM in office to take THEM down.
