President Biden claimed he wanted to be a unifier, but he not only doesn’t care about winning Republican support for his initiatives, he doesn’t even seem to like or respect half the US population or the nation that…elected him. This week, after a year of Democrats defunding police and three months of opening up borders, letting in drug gangs, and ending arrests and deportations of known criminals, Biden announced plans to fight the unexpectedly rising violent crime by making it harder for law-abiding citizens to defend themselves.
In revealing his new gun control proposals, he took another swipe at his own nation, calling America an “international disgrace” for our high gun crime ranking.
That’s the type of thing that, had Trump said it, the “fact-checkers” would have fallen over each other to contradict him. While they may have gone silent under Biden, unfortunately for him, Politifact already checked that claim back in 2018 and rated it a “Pants On Fire” lie.
That check involved an anti-gun control meme that claimed if you didn’t count the Democrat-run cities of Detroit, Chicago, Washington, St. Louis and New Orleans, the US would drop from third in the world in murders to 189th. Politifact said removing those cities would only drop our murder rate per 100,000 by 7.9% and our ranking in the world by four spots. (Never mind that they still found that only five Democrat-run cities accounted for raising us four places in the worldwide murder rankings.)
HOWEVER…the other part of the meme they branded as a lie was the claim that the US ranks third among all nations in murders. In fact, we were 9th in total homicides, but that’s because of our large population. Using the standard comparison formula of homicides per 100,000 people, the US ranked 94th in the world.
I could think of something about the US that’s an international embarrassment, but it’s not the fact that we have a Second Amendment.
