I’m disgusted with a small and selfish group of Republicans who probably feel they are “Spartacus” but the movie best fitting them is “The Gang Who Couldn’t Shoot Straight.”

Several of these hold-outs (I should say “hold-ups”) are friends and I supported and campaigned for many.  I won’t be in the future.  The simple of rule of politics is that you take your stand, but if you don’t have enough following to lead, then recognize that you simply didn’t sell your ideas very well.  Less than 20 GOP members of Congress are stopping 200 of their fellow Republicans from getting about the business of investigating corruption in the White House, FBI, DOJ, and in Congress itself.  Instead, without being able to articulate a specific reason for their objections, they have blocked the election of Kevin McCarthy as Speaker and in so doing making the Republicans look like a bunch of 6 year olds who refuse to play unless the majority surrenders to the tantrums of the few.

Is Kevin McCarthy perfect?  Of course not.  But he has faithfully worked to recruit candidates, help fund them, and get them elected.  The ultimate outrage is that some he helped win and raised funds for now have shown they really DO think it’s about them and not the bigger principles of the conservative movement.

Dr. E. V. Hill, longtime CA pastor used to say “If you think you’re a leader and you look behind you and no one is following, you aren’t a leader—you’re just out for a walk.”  The actions of the petulant circle of “Never-Kevins” don’t amount to enough votes to get close to winning.  But they may have enough to make sure their own team loses.  These guys are setting fire to their own hosue, but they are arsonists who didn’t even have fire insurance.  The mission is just “burn it down.”  And in so doing, empowering the very Democrats some of us worked very hard to put in the minority.

We did NOT work to blow up our own opportunity to take on the Pelosi, Schiff, Nadler, and Squad team, but that’s the effect of the actions of the camera hungry Congress members who may deep down believe they are more “principled” than everyone else, but have shown a startling level of political immaturity.

If the tiny crowd of political tots can’t convince a majority of their peers to follow them off the cliff, they should have the self-awareness to admit they fired their best shot and simply missed the target.  Now it’s time to fight for the American people.  If after taking leadership, Kevin and company don’t deliver, you might be able to make a better case for lighting the fuse to the bomb to blow up the place.

I pretty disgusted too, but not with the Freedom Caucus. Kevin McCarthy showed his true colors when he had the Speaker position with Trump as President and the house and senate with republican majorities. He did nothing productive and wasted a great opportunity to turn things around. He’ll waste this one, too, unless the Lord can save him.

I disagree with you. It was about holding the Speaker's feet to the fire. Promises made, Lord willing, promises kept! I am greatly encouraged because the world watched our Consitutional Republic in action. Win / win! We are praying for our leaders each day. Even the crazy godless side.(D)

I think you’re wrong about the 20 holdouts. They stopped McCarthy from caving in to the Democrats by adding provisions to the Speaker.

I love reading your informative articles.
You said to leave a comment so I just wanted to say it was encouraging to see the Republicans stand up for what they believe. We’ve always seemed hesitant to make waves and maybe this disagreement about Kevin McCarthy will stoke the fire and show we won’t be run over anymore. I guess we will see.
Hopefully some of the liberal issues will be addressed and brought back to a more conservative baseline.
Thank you for all you do.
We are so proud of your daughter. You and your wife are obviously wonderful parents.
May you be superabundantly blessed as you stand by what you believe.

I am glad that it took 15 rounds of voting to have Kevin McCarthy elected Speaker of the House. These 20+ Patriot Representatives stood up for what was right and stuck to their "guns" and represented We The People. I am also glad that the Republicans had a smaller majority because if it had been a very large Republican majority, the voting for Speaker would have been finished on the 1st round of voting. We The People are tired of having "The Swamp"(i.e. Lobbists, etc.) override what the American people want. I just hope that the Rules of the House are rewritten according to what the 20+ Representatives asked for.

I disagree vehemently that the 6 were acting immature. This is true democracy. Because of them we now have 72 hrs. to read a new law, each law is now only 1 item, instead of a basket of insanity. They have put kevin into a straight jacket if he does not do what he said he would do!!!!
I love it. Finally maybe Republicans will get something done because of what the 6 sacrificed. We had a trifecta in 2017 and 18, yet nothing was done because Kevin can be a RINO. These 6 fearless conservative leaders have made a lasting difference in the Republican Party!!!!!! Maybe the Republican party finally has to fight instead of go along to get along. Wish Rino republicans would have done the same thing in the Senate and voted out Mitch McConnel - a traitor to me and my generation of kids to come.

Governor, happy new year!! I hope it’s a great and blessed year for you and your family!!

I couldn’t disagree more with you about this article. I’ll skip straight to the EV Hill quote to make my point. I do agree with you that EV Hill was correct, if no one’s following you then you’re not leading, you’re out for a walk :). But I completely disagree with you that these “holdouts” don’t have followers. On the contrary, they have tens of thousands of followers called constituents! Above EVERYTHING ELSE, Representatives are there in Congress to REPRESENT their constituents. And these “holdouts” know exactly why they were elected!! It wasn’t to kowtow to a group of drunk-on-power, Group think politicians (from either side). They are there in Congress to change it! They are there to drain the swamp! They were elected to begin to hold the government, both sides, accountable for their irresponsible and disgusting actions. And had they caved, like you wanted them to (with threats of never supporting them again) we would all be much worse off for it!! But instead, by holding their ground and not caving they won critical reforms for the American people!

Members of Congress are not leaders because they can be strong armed into group think and following!! They are leaders because thousands (or a majority) of their constituents have said “we choose to follow you as you represent us in Washington”. And thank God, these 20 recognized that and didn’t cave to your and others pressure to make them, once again, like always, bow down to the same failures of the system and the people running the system of the past. I believe you were very wrong on this one Governor. I would hope you would admit that and learn from what has happened this week! I don’t expect it these days as it seems that people’s egos are growing ever so monstrously. But it would be nice to see you and others admit the wrong, and instead be sincerely happy for the American people…who were the real winners this week! (Along with freedom and the Constitution I might add).

I always appreciate reading your columns and I hope you know my disagreement isn’t personal!

Again blessings to you and your family this year!! :)

Governor Huckabee, I Respectfully disagree with you about the holdouts in the Speaker of the House elections vote. It's imperative to take a stand against the Republicans that have caved into the left in the past (Rino's). If getting concessions out of McCarthy was what was needed, then I am glad and willing to wait a few more days instead of rolling over for the majority! In the end McCarthy still got his seat by the few that voted present instead, and allowed the rest to rescue him! But the holdouts did show that there are some willing to have a backbone, and not go along with the status quo, and that gives conservatives more hope going forward in the future! It's way past time "We The People" and our representatives grow a pair and fight for the American people instead of appeasing Congress! My opinion, Greg Estes
