Note: Col. Ken Allard, USA (Ret.) is a former Cold War intelligence officer, West Point faculty member and Dean of the National War College. He also served for ten years as an on-air military analyst for NBC News.

My heart aches for the 12 Marines and one Navy corpsman killed yesterday in Kabul. Even more for their 13 families awaiting that life-changing visit from serving officers in dress uniforms; bringing the official notification that their loved one gave his life carrying out a noble but badly flawed mission. But there is something especially tragic about Marines engaged in a mercy mission, pitilessly targeted by suicide bombers committing war crimes under the guise of religious obligation.

General Jim Mattis is most closely identified with the slogan, “No better friend, no worse enemy” to describe the marine’s warrior ethos. An alite force of naval infantry, marines deploy on the toughest missions: to seize an island, to assault a beach-head - or to rectify an impossible situation created by a singularly inept president. Sadly, that was the situation in which these hapless marines found themselves: guarding the over-crowded cul-de-sac where the truly desperate scrambled madly for escape. Making these uncertainties infinitely worse was that baseline security was supposedly provided by the Taliban, our sworn enemies since 9-11.

How had it come to this? From the commander-in-chief on down through the entire chain-of-command, effective performance depends on many factors but this above all: Has this admiral or general, commander or colonel set the conditions that will ensure the deployed forces have their greatest chance of success? That unforgiving calculus begins at the service academies, continues through the staff colleges and identifies the elites who attend the war colleges and ultimately fill command billets. Regardless of service, these flag officers have learned to construct forces best geared to prevail in their missions, balancing its components on air, land and sea. An equally important question: What forces will flow to the theater of operations and in which order? And when Murphy’s Law always kicks in, what will you do about it?

Unfortunately, we live in an age of rampant military illiteracy where less than half of one percent of all Americans ever serve in uniform. Military history is an unknown subject in most colleges and may permanently disqualify you from applying for journalism school. Joe Biden embodies that legacy of ignorance, made even worse by his 50 years of service as a legislator. Compromising values is a routine legislative strategy where the most fundamental differences are routinely split down the middle. With that training, Biden always sounds like a pandering poseur when he threatens to use military force. Like yesterday, when according to The Federalist, he swore, “Those who carried out this attack and anyone who wishes America harm know this, we will not forgive…We will not forget. We will hunt you down to make you pay. I will defend our interests and our people with every measure at my command.” Think our enemies believed him, that their sandals trembled at the fearsome prospect of having annoyed the ferocious Joe Biden? Nope, I don’t either.

The munchkins surrounding him went out of their way to assure Americans that now is not the time for recriminations, that our entire focus must be on de-constructing the artful trap which Biden willfully engineered. While Kabul suffers agonies, Washington endlessly dissembles. To hear Biden tell it, they deliberately bypassed the Bagram air base - one of the biggest in the region - because Kabul’s sole airstrip was closer and more convenient. Seriously, fellas? That they reversed the natural order of operations, removing the bulk of American combat power while leaving the teeming multitudes for last? In what war college do they teach that concept? Even worse: The Daily Wire reported on Wednesday that the US is leaving behind for Taliban use some 70,000 vehicles, 600,000 vehicles and 208 aircraft. The article by Joseph Curl quoted one authority, “We built them a pretty amazing war chest and now all of it is in the hands of the Taliban.” Bottom Line: Biden set the conditions for failure, not success.

His presidential ineptitude may have its greatest effect when our enemies test our open southern border, now stripped of all its defenses. When they do, remember that the 2020 electoral defeat of Donald Trump will cast an even larger shadow in American history than the looming towers of 9-11.

What is truly sad is when junior ranking officers and enlisted personnel know how to manage situations better than leadership, yet their hands are tied. The politicization of military leadership has been going on for years and the military, instead of being the "military" has become a social experiment - the military's job is to kill people and break things, not be the proving ground for what should be socially acceptable to the rest of America. Instead of worrying about "white rage" , CRT and all the other flavors of the day, the military should be concentrating on doing their missions - period. When I was in, the "kinder, gentler" military mindset was just starting, now it has taken over and our men and women service personnel are paying the price for the inept, political leadership we have now.

Thank you or a thought-provoking article. Unfortunately, the people who should read and heed it probably won't and will continue to fail. With the news this morning that a drone strike occurred that removed an ISIS-K planner, why haven't more drones been deployed to take out all the military equipment Biden is willing to gift the enemy? No reason to leave them available.

My son is a former Army Ranger. Politics rears it’s ugly head way to much in our military- especially in ROE! Election years should have NO influence on how missions are carried out, and yet, they do. I think we need an amendment to the Constitution that states “ if the elected POTUS has NOT served in the military, he/she is not considered Commander -in-Chief & that title should go to the highest ranking military person.” Joe Biden couldn’t fight his way into a pair of socks!

Could not agree more. It seems our command ranks are full of Woke commanders. Do any of them know how to fight? I could have done a better job than these idiots. This make sense if it was done on purpose and if so a firing squad should ensue for Treason.

Thank you, Col. Allard, for your service and, in this context, your insightful and succinct analysis of the dilemma in which Americans find themselves due to the arrogance and ineptitude of the Biden Administration. Its greatest accomplishment is in fooling itself and its diehards with a never ending display of smoke and mirrors.
In its fervor to cancel anything Trump, Biden and his puppeteers have left this country wide open for those who wish us harm. First, they opened the southern border to anyone who could affect the appearance and behavior of a downtrodden third world refugee while bringing COVID-19, gang violence, and ill intent into the USA. The Biden Administration has overtaxed our Border Patrol and deliberately placed our citizens in harm’s way.
Now they have placed our military and citizens abroad in a totally untenable situation likely to make 9/11 look like a warm-up act.
I greatly fear for our country and its people.
The greatest fear of all is that we have another 3-1/2 years of this bunch of buffoons educated far beyond their intelligence.
God, save us all and the United States of America.

Thank you for speaking the truth! Somebody needs to. The one in the White House does not deserve to be called president, let alone "commander in chief"! Totally incapable to lead, and should be removed from office soon as possible!

Great article BUT...... blaming Joe Biden for any of the mess our country is in is just flat out wrong. Biden plays but one very minor role in the running of America today. That role is to warm the chair seat in the Oval Office, nothing more. I have serious doubts that Biden is aware of much that goes on around him, much less making policy decisions. He's doing exactly what the ruling elite put him in there to do, sit quietly and read short sentences on occasion, nothing more. Heel Joe, sit Joe, roll over Joe, play dead Joe. Good boy Joe, here's your treat!
Your comments on todays military leadership are spot on however, although sadly "leadership" is a poor choice of descriptive words in this case. If we had real military leadership, those Admirals and Generals you mentioned would be running the show, not chair bound DC politicians, and ultra wealthy elites pulling the strings of countless bureaucrats.
The place we occupy in todays world is right down there with the other "lowest 10% of countries" when grouped by how a nation is respected by the rest of the world. This USA is a global joke!
Anybody else for taking it back, however necessary?

You have nailed this incompetent, demented excuse of a President. This entire administration is unqualified for any of their positions. It's time to remove them from office asap.

My hear goes out for those heroes- Marines who gave their lives to preserve the security and peace of the motherland. But one cannot escape the thought that could this expensive loss of soldier's lives happen if our President planned well and execute the withdrawal accordingly to ensure zero casualties? No he did not and it is so terrible and disgusting that he did not make sure that lives not be lost but more so with the BILLIONS WORTH OF MODERN CLASSIFIED WAR WEAPONS to the Taliban is UNFORGIVABLE AND UNFORGETABLE.... One would """guess""" there is a " gymnasium full of money for him and his corrupt dealers " out of this...he doesn't care ! Poor Americans, they were scammed in the last election....

It honestly, looks like they are setting them up. Just like our police. Defund our police and defund our military. Why else would they leave war shipment behind. Like we aren't going to need it any more. Breaking my heart. These are our son's and daughters and they are hanging them out for terrorists to kill.
