President Biden traveled to Monterey Park, California, to announce new executive orders on gun control, including even more background checks.

Republican Rep. Thomas Massie said it was appropriate that Biden traveled to Los Angeles County, a “virtual gun-free zone” that’s racked with violent crime. He said Biden’s proposals had been tried and hadn’t prevented any public shooting “in this century.” And he said it was also appropriate that he went to Hollywood since a couple of his proposals are pure science fiction. He said, "One of them is this ‘ballistics database’ where you're going to take a fingerprint of a gun using the shell casing or the bullet. New York and Maryland tried this program. They spent tens of millions of dollars and after 15 years, never solved a single crime."

It’s true that in most cases of mass shootings, the perpetrator was known to police and might have been prevented from getting a gun, but the existing laws weren’t followed or enforced. So the obvious solution: put more legal burdens on the law-abiding.

All this raises an interesting issue. Concealed carry laws have spread across America, and North Carolina looks poised to eliminate the requirement for a permit to own a handgun.

Gun control advocates keep claiming that all this freedom to bear arms is going to lead to a return of the Wild West, with people shooting each other on every street corner. But the only places where that’s happening are blue cities with strict gun control laws. That prompts the question, “How likely are concealed carry permit holders to commit crimes?” The gun rights news website The Reload has the answer: “Not very.”

https://thereload.com/minnesota-reports-miniscule-gun-crime-rate-for-carry-permit-holders/

According to records of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, out of nearly 400,000 concealed carry permit holders in the state, only 126 have committed a gun crime. Compared to the FBI’s national database, the average American was more than twice as likely to commit a gun crime as a concealed carry holder in MInnesota.

The figures seem to suggest that gun crimes are more likely to be committed by criminals, while people who obey gun laws and get a permit are more likely to be law-abiding. I know, I’m as shocked as you are!
