Goodbye to Richard Belzer and Stella Stevens

I’m sad to have to relay news of the passing of two long-time entertainers. Richard Belzer died Sunday at his home in France at 78 of undisclosed causes.

Belzer was best known to most Americans for his long-running role as Detective John Munch on “Law & Order: SUV” and its various offshoots. He also had roles in many other shows, from “The X-Files” to “The Larry Sanders Show.” He retired from acting in 2016.
Those who know him from his dramatic work might not be aware that he started out as one of the most highly-regarded and most caustic of stand-up comedians. From 1975 to 1980, he was the audience warm-up comic for “Saturday Night Live.” He was known as a comic’s comic, someone greatly admired by his peers and definitely not someone you would dare to heckle. But he never broke through to major TV success as a comedian, maybe because his prickly, edgy persona worked better in dramas. His unrepeatable last words (at the link, in censored form) may give you an idea why.
We also must bid farewell to one of the great screen beauties of the 1960s, who has died at 84 after suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease.
The beautiful blonde was Playboy’s Playmate of the Month for January 1960. But she was more than just a gorgeous face and figure, and she became one of the few Playmates to build a solid career in Hollywood. Her comedic talents earned her parts opposite top stars such as Jerry Lewis in “The Nutty Professor,” Elvis Presley in “Girls! Girls! Girls!” and Dean Martin in “The Silencers.” She was also part of the all-star cast of the 1972 disaster movie, “The Poseidon Adventure.” When major roles got scarcer, she turned to B movies and TV, and also became a producer and director in her own right, as well as the mother of actor Andrew Stevens.
Blogger Mark Evanier shared a personal anecdote illustrating that she was as nice to her fans in person as they would hope she would be.

The end of new cars?!?
President Biden likes to boast about his brilliant victory at reducing inflation, which is now only three times what it was under Trump. That, of course, is added to all the prior inflation we had under him, so it’s actually much more. You don’t need me to tell you how unaffordable life is becoming, but Fortune magazine just took a look at yet another aspect of the American Dream that’s no longer attainable for the average person: a new car.
That evil capitalist Henry Ford invented the assembly line so that every working American could afford a new car. But today, Fortune reports that new cars are only for the rich. The average price of a new car in the US has leaped to nearly $50,000, up 30% just since 2019. And the average monthly new car payment is $777, nearly doubled since 2019, and almost a sixth of the median after-tax household income. Biden’s obsession with forcing everyone to buy an electric car is about to send car prices rocketing even higher. Even used car payments have risen to an average of $544 a month.
It's bad enough that we're being driven to the poorhouse, but do we have to go in a bus?
More on the Project Veritas shakeup
The baffling saga of James O’Keefe and Project Veritas took another dramatic turn Monday. After the organization’s board claimed there was never any suggestion of removing O’Keefe from his position as CEO, O’Keefe announced that he had been removed. But true to his longtime style, he did so in a riveting, 45-minute video in which he revealed the events that led to his ouster and even exposed an internal text message from a board member bragging about getting a raise if O’Keefe is forced out.
There’s a lot more at the link, and I confess I have no idea about what happened or if there was any real justification for O’Keefe leaving (the board now claims he was suspended for excessive spending.) I do think that Project Veritas does vital work exposing the truth about powerful people and organizations in an age when too many media outlets see themselves as nothing but unpaid press agents for those same powers. I hope that PV will go on even without O’Keefe, and I also hope that O’Keefe will be able to do as he says he will and form a new organization with the same mission, maybe under a different name.
Imagine if all the people who are gleeful over O’Keefe leaving Project Veritas were suddenly faced with the prospect of TWO Project Veritases!
DeSantis and Adams exchange fire
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis attended a law enforcement event in New York City Monday, and New York Mayor Eric Adams couldn’t resist putting his foot in it with a typically self-righteous liberal tweet:
“Welcome to New York City, Gov. DeSantis, a place where we don’t ban books, discriminate against our LGBTQ+ neighbors, use asylum seekers as props or let the government stand between a woman and health care. We’re happy to teach you something about values while you’re here.”
DeSantis’ great spokesperson Christine Pushaw immediately leveled Adams with this response:
“Nice rhetoric — but here’s reality: More Americans fled NYC than any other metro area last year. More Americans moved to Florida than any other state. You know this, Mayor Adams, and you’ve talked (accurately) about crime pushing people out of NYC. Florida’s crime rate meanwhile is at a 50-year low. Maybe it’s you who can learn from Ron DeSantis?”
Not to rub salt in that burn, but I’d also point out that I don’t consider it particularly good “values” to allow pornographic books in elementary schools, or to let children be exposed to sexually-charged drag queen shows, or to define slaughtering babies in the womb up to the minute of birth as “health care.” As for all the concern for the dignity of “asylum seekers,” Mayor Adams, didn’t you just send a bunch of them up to Canada in February to get rid of them because they’re exhausting your resources and trashing your hotels? And you only got a tiny fraction of the number that arrived in Florida.
There are a lot of glass buildings in New York City. Maybe try not to throw stones from inside them.
Big Box Stores are closing again
Over 800 outlets of various big box stores including Walmart, Bed Bath & Beyond, Party City, Macy’s, Tuesday Morning, Big Lots and more, are facing closure nationwide. There are a number of factors at play, especially inflation and high interest rates, but also stores pulling out of Democrat-run cities that are letting criminals and shoplifters run wild.
As to that last point, Mike Miller at Redstate.com makes the case that “you know your city is in trouble when even your Walmarts are leaving.” And after Illinois lost 300,000 residents since the last census, Chicago is about to lose three Walmarts.
