Economy update
Friday, the stock market plunged yet again, on news that California bank regulators and the FDIC had seized the assets of Silicon Valley Bank and placed it in receivership. This is the biggest bank failure since the 2008 economic meltdown, and the second-biggest in US history.
Only deposits up to $250,000 are federally-insured, and Bloomberg reported that over 93% of the bank’s $193 billion in deposits are insured.
In New York, customers showed up to try to withdraw their money, and the police were called on them.
SVB was a big part of the tech industry. Just two days earlier, the cryptocurrency bank Silvergate also collapsed.

It’s been a rough week for banks and the stock market in general, and an ominous one for all Americans who’ve ever studied the Great Depression. It punctured a hole in the White House narrative about the booming Biden economy. One bright spot is that the new jobs report for February showed that 311,000 jobs were added, which is more than experts predicted. But because of longterm mismanagement, we find ourselves in a Catch-22 where good economic numbers force the Fed to raise interest rates even more to try to curb inflation, and that crashes the stock market and raises everyone’s cost of living yet again.

You’re probably wondering how a major bank could simply collapse (and it was such a surprise that CNBC’s Jim Cramer was urging people to buy stock in it just a month ago.) Then again, maybe it wasn’t a surprise to everyone…
Tucker Carlson had a good segment on that very subject last night. He showed how this bank’s officers, like too many leaders of corporations these days, replaced sound business practices and maximizing return on investment with virtue-signaling about climate change and promoting “diversity, equity and inclusion.” Now, thanks to them, a diverse range of bank customers have lost their equity and may all be included in bankruptcy court.

Carlson has the video to show how everyone from top bank executives to the Fed Chair to the President have become obsessed with pushing woke political agendas to the detriment of doing what is supposed to be their real job of safeguarding the nation and our assets. He asks, where are the sober, responsible, qualified adults?
I’m sorry, but that’s an identity box that no longer gets checked.
Turley: QAnon Shaman "got the shaft"
Law professor Jonathan Turley weighs in on how “QAnon Shaman” Jacob Chansley “got the shaft” by having the government withhold exculpatory video proving he did not violently break into the Capitol on January 6th but remained peaceful and polite as cops escorted him around.
This footage was reportedly withheld from his attorneys, as the J6 Kangaroo Kommittee released only edited and cherry-picked excerpts designed to promote their narrative. He accepted a plea deal and pleaded guilty because he was being treated shockingly harshly, like being held in solitary confinement, and wanted it to end. So they manufactured evidence, withheld exculpatory evidence, and coerced a guilty plea out of him. Somebody should be in a federal prison, but it doesn’t sound like it’s this guy.
And it gets worse: Elon Musk responded to Turley by posting video taken by another Trump supporter who’s facing prosecution, showing Chansley reading Trump’s tweet to the crowd and telling them to “obey our President,” do what he asks, and remain peaceful and “go home.”
As I’ve pointed out on several prior occasions, if these people were really there to commit insurrection and overthrow the government, they sure weren’t very good at it.
Musk also noted that this man got four years in prison while the knife-wielding guy who assaulted Dave Chappelle on stage got a $3,000 fine and no jail time. But then, Chappelle is a champion of free speech who’s hated by trans activists, so his assault falls under our current government’s “He had it coming” rule.
One note I want to add to Turley’s commentary and to the official narrative/excuse currently being pushed by the Democrats and their media poodles:
They’re trying to claim that by showing the video disproving the left’s narrative that January 6th was worse than Pearl Harbor and 9/11 combined, we’re saying there was no violence and everyone there is innocent and falsely accused. No, that’s idiotic. Nobody has said that. I’ve been saying from day one that anyone who did commit acts of violence or vandalism should face the full force of the law. But on the other hand, people who walked through an open door of a public building and took a selfie should not have their civil rights revoked, their names smeared as domestic terrorists, and be hounded into federal prison for decades.
I believe in justice and punishment, but I’d like to reserve it for those who are actually guilty. That used to be considered a liberal value. Now, it seems that the only liberal value left is denying reality.
Well, with at least one exception. Naomi Wolf, the liberal, feminist author and former Clinton and Gore adviser, wrote a “full-throated apology" to ““Conservatives, Republicans, MAGA” for being “duped” by the January 6th Kommittee’s propaganda into believing they were insurrectionists or insurrectionist sympathizers. She admitted that the mistakes in judgement by people like her “hurt millions of other people like you all, in existential ways,” and wrote, “I must say that I am sorry for believing the dominant legacy-media ‘narrative’ pretty completely from the time it was rolled out, without asking questions.”
Now, that’s what a sincere apology sounds like, and it should be accepted. She also makes an excellent point that these hypocritical liberals praised Daniel Ellsberg for leaking the Pentagon Papers to the New York Times, but they attack Tucker Carlson for airing video given to him by the House Speaker that’s of national significance but “that the current government would prefer to keep hidden.” Join the club: I never imagined I’d see the day when leftists were attacking journalists and comedians and defending the CIA and FBI.
I know it’s easy to believe things when you’re hearing them all around and from people whose political beliefs align with yours. But I’ve always believed that in the long run, it doesn’t do you any good to believe in things that simply aren’t true, or to listen only to sources that reinforce your beliefs. That’s why we hunt down original sources to find out what people really said (including political opponents), what their true intentions are, and what really happened. Anyone who did that wouldn’t be surprised by my calling that motley crew of Constitution shredders the “January 6th Kangaroo Kommittee” from its inception.
I’d suggest that Ms. Wolf start reading this newsletter so, to quote the Who, she “won’t get fooled again.”
Taibbi responds
Real (not “so-called”) journalist Matt Taibbi has written a response to the unhinged reception he and Michael Shellenberger received from House Democrats this week when they tried to testify about the weaponization of government agencies to silence their critics on Twitter.
https://www.racket.news/p/the-democrats-have-lost-the-plot
That link is to his page and it requires a subscription to read it all, but you’ll get the gist of his low opinion of his Democrat interrogators from the excerpt. You won’t be surprised to learn that the word “surreal” appears in the first sentence, or that he was stunned by their lack of interest in free speech on Twitter (other than that of liberal supermodel Chrissy Teigen) and their lack of understanding of basic facts about journalists and the First Amendment.
Personally, I’m stunned that he was stunned to learn that. I assumed he knew he would be dealing with a bunch of so-called “legislators” who, unlike Matt, couldn’t possibly tell you what their qualifications are for the job they hold.
Today’s Democratic Party In A Nutshell
In Miami, Florida, a newly-elected Democrat city commissioner was asked to start a meeting by leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Turned out she was the only person in the room who didn’t know it.
